OT but I've been thinking where we lag behind and where we lead the world... almost in other areas or just invented something.

Our lower leagues are the most supported in the world I think even in Spain their 2nd division is supported poorly. I like the English sense of underdog.

We invented curry didn't we?

We've invented heavy metal the most successful bands such as Led Zeppelin and the Beatles.

Rugby, Cricket, FOOTBALL!!!

Anything else?

The origin of cricket is harder to pinpoint. There are a number of tales that abound. Yes, I think Sussex are the oldest county club though.

Think previous generations had more to be proud of being British (not necessarily English), not that I think pride, particularly excessive pride, is a healthy thing at all.

Sorry, but I personally now spend far more of my life being embarrassed by British and particularly proud English behaviour and attitudes. It's a good question though, but I really can't think of a positive general answer relevant in the present day other than the generosity of the public toward charitable events.
