Apologies for being a bit ill-informed here but if Frank Lampard captained England on Wednesday, after being out of contract with Chelsea, who was the last England captain who didn't have a club when he captained the national team?

Isn't he technically still with Chelsea - just won't be extending after the end of June.

Good stats there. I don't know the answer, but it is bizarre to think that the England Captain was out of contract.
