Watching England v Ecuador it has just sunk into my thick skull that with Lambert, Lallana and Oxlade-Chamberlain, the Southampton squad who we beat with room to spare to the title in 2010/11 had three players who are going to the World Cup with England and who, between them seem now to be priced at a total of at least £45 million.

We did alright didn't we?

I think I remember Gus saying that if he had failed to win the league with the players Southampton had at the time "he would sack himself" which is probably why he is in the premier league and twatkins is at Reading.

To be fair, we had great players too! Murray, Wood, Barnes, Bennett, Noone, Bridcutt, LuaLua and the better defence. All seven of those players have / will have PL experience!

Yeah, but we had Ankergren, Painter, Baz, Batti and Sandaza. I'd have Baz over Lallana any day.

Tbf they had most of these players the previous season too, but finished 7th.*

*5th were it not for a 10 point deduction

Had the league been ran from the point Nigel Adkins took over they would have finished three points ahead of us. That said, it was still quite something to stay close to a team with that much talent.

That does ignore the fact that, still being in the race for second with Huddersfield, Sot'on had to play until the final game. We were already on the beach having wrapped up the Championship with four games to spare.
