Jake Forster-Caskey started for England in France
Jake Forster-Caskey's growing reputation earned him a place in the England team to face Brazil last night.
The Albion midfielder retained his spot in England under-21 manager Gareth Southgate’s starting XI for the second game of the Toulon tournament.
Indications were that Southgate wanted to play Forster-Caskey and Albion team-mate Solly March in the seemingly easier group opener against Qatar last Thursday before reverting to a more experienced line-up to face Brazil.
But Forster-Caskey’s excellent performance against Qatar, which was capped by scoring the second goal, persuaded Southgate to pick him ahead of Chelsea’s Josh McEachran last night.
It was a third England under-21 cap for Forster-Caskey in what is an under-20s tournament but his night ended early when he was replaced by striker Cauley Woodrow in the 50th minute with the Three Lions 2-0 behind.
England went behind to an eighth-minute Alisson effort after a defensive mix-up and Lucas Silva struck Brazil’s second after a mistake by Liam Moore in the 47th minute.
James Ward-Prowse struck a superb 70th-minute free-kick but England could not find an equaliser in a 2-1 loss.
March came on as a last-minute substitute.
Albion keeper Christian Walton played for England under-19s as they beat Scotland 2-1 last night in their quest for European qualification.
