I don't envisage the three coming down to struggle like some of the previous teams and the other ex-Premier League teams seem to have steadied the ship.

Last season can't have been that tough. Plagued by injuries, sold our 'star player' x2 half way through, couldn't score goals to save our lives, and still finished top 6 with a playoff place.

Realistic auto contenders: Cardiff, Derby, Fulham, Norwich, Wigan

Play off hopefuls: Blackburn, Bolton, Brighton, Ipswich, Middlesborough, Forest, Reading, Watford, Wolves

Unlikely to go up or down: Birmingham, Bournemouth, Leeds, Wednesday

Obviously all that before transfers, but seem to be the stereotypical groupings. Will be a mad league again that's for sure.

In my heart I'd love to see us among the favourites for an automatic promotion place.

I am very optimistic but also sufficiently realistic that my head keeps reminding me that we will be starting again under a new manager / coach who will then have to rebuild a significant chunk of the playing squad, get them playing his system, keep them injury free and turn them into consistent contenders. IMHO we will do well to be fighting for the play offs again.

It does not help that we do not enjoy a level playing field, courtesy of parachute payments and adherence to FFP, so cannot just buy our way upward.

If we can succeed it will be a magnificent achievement and testimony to our choice of new manager and ability to recruit the right calibre of players.
