Gordon Greer is in the Scotland squad to face Nigeria
Scotland boss Gordon Strachan has revealed why Albion’s captain is perfect for his international plans.
Gordon Greer will hope for a fourth cap, fitness permitting, when Scotland face Nigeria in a friendly at Craven Cottage on Wednesday, May 28.
The Seagulls’ centre-back has helped Scotland to clean sheets in each of his three appearances to date, notably a 1-0 success in Poland.
Strachan included him a 28-man party to play Nigeria in the final friendly before Scotland launch their European Championship qualifying campaign.
His participation will be subject to recovery from the hamstring problem which forced him out of the Seagulls’ play-off defeat at Derby.
Strachan has brought back Gary Caldwell and mentioned Greer in glowing terms when asked about the Wigan defender.
He said: “The fact he (Caldwell) can pass the ball when he has got it is also a bonus.
“He’s a bit like Gordon Greer, not the fastest thing on two feet but since Gordon has played I don’t think anybody has scored a goal against us.
“The fact he (Greer) can read it and be in positions and the fact he can read it and start a move at the same time, that helps you defensively.
“I have got ideas on how I want to try to play the game and that is keeping the ball and retaining it at this level.”
Greer will join up with three of his team’s semi-final victors when he reports for duty.
Derby left-back Craig Forsyth and striker Chris Martin have been called up for the first time and join clubmate Craig Bryson in the squad.
