If you’ve managed to buy tickets for the Derby matches, well done! Back in October 1976, when the World Wide Web was a mere twinkle in the eye of inventor Tim Berners-Lee, online transactions were unheard of. Instead, the surefire way to secure tickets for Brighton's mouth-watering League Cup 4th Round clash with Derby County was ...by attending a reserve match with Charlton Athletic at the Goldstone!

The formidable Rams had been Division One champions in 1975, and included England internationals such as Colin Todd, Roy McFarland and Charlie George. No wonder ticket demand was high. Brighton & Hove Albion’s clever admissions scheme paved the way for an astonishing gate of 17,554 to cheer on Albion reserves to a handsome 3-0 victory over their Charlton counterparts.Derby-born Brighton reserve player Vaughan Woolley got on the scoresheet and made the most of the occasion by jumping into the crowd!

Thanks to Clough and Taylor, Woolley was one of many players with Derby connections that found their way to the Goldstone Ground in the 1970s. Others include Stephen Ward (no, not the current Albion left-back!), Peter Ward, Dave Busby, Tommy Mason, Allen Lewis, Ricky Marlowe, Billy McEwan, Paul Fuschillo and Jim Walker. Pick of the crop was undoubtedly a star striker… can you guess who?On the afternoon of the eventual League Cup tie with mighty Derby, TV interviews with boss Alan Mullery and his not-so-secret weapon were broadcast to whet the appetite of supporters:
Moseley ended up transferring to the Seagulls in October 1977 in a £20,000 deal. His rival for the number one jersey was Eric Steele, currently the Rams’ goalkeeping coach. Back in November 1979, this dapper man proudly appeared in the Argus women’s page in as an ‘executive footballer’.
Before his transfer to Watford, Steele had contributing immensely to the Seagulls’ meteoric rise from the Third to the First Division with Brighton in the 1970s. Then, with his career nearing its end, ‘Groucho’ emulated this feat with Derby County in the 1980s.

John Gregory was an influential part of that rising Derby County side. Although he subsequently blotted his copybook with Brighton & Hove Albion fans over the departure of Gareth Barry to Aston Villa in 1997, his time at the Goldstone from 1979 to 1981 was a happy one.
Scoring the goals for Derby in the top flight was the prolific Dean Saunders, who had earlier established himself as hot property with Brighton before a move to Oxford. Here he is the Welshman partnered by ex-Rams favourite Alan Biley in an FA Cup tie in 1986:

Watched by a bumper attendance of 33,500 fans, Third Division Brighton got off to a flying start, with Peter Ward firing past County keeper Graham Moseley after 37 seconds. However, the visitors equalised, eventually edging a 2-1 win in the replay at the Baseball Ground.

Despite losing Saunders to Liverpool in summer 1991, the Rams’ firepower proved too much for the Seagulls at the Baseball Ground in September that year:
As for Alan Biley, if you’re feeling nostalgic for seeing his hairstyle in full flow at Brighton’s home ground, don’t forget the Rod Stewart concert at the Amex Stadium is on 13th June!
