Doncaster Rovers' sympathy as fan Ray Dunning dies at match

A football club has expressed its sympathies to the family of a supporter who died during a match which saw his team relegated from the Championship.

Ray Dunning, 42, collapsed as he watched Doncaster Rovers lose to league champions Leicester City at the King Power stadium on Saturday.

Mr Dunning was among the 2,000 away fans who had travelled to the Midlands for the end-of-season clash.

Efforts were made to save his life in the stands before he went to hospital.

Supporters at the ground were seen calling out for medical help for Mr Dunning.

'Avid follower'

In a statement, the club said: "Doncaster Rovers would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Ray Dunning, the Doncaster Rovers supporter who, it has been confirmed, died on Saturday.

"An avid follower over the years, Ray was taken ill whilst attending the Sky Bet Championship fixture between Leicester City and Doncaster Rovers at the King Power Stadium, Leicester, on 3 May, 2014.

"The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family, who have sent their thanks to the Doncaster Rovers fans for their efforts inside the stadium and the messages of support they have received."

The 1-0 loss to Leicester City, along with other results, meant Rovers were relegated to League One on Saturday.

LA...wishing it was devon..
Just be nice to think he was unaware of the relegation....after all the positive threads we have had re falling unwell at a football match and excellent chances of survival, it is very sad to see that someone didn't make it. thoughts to his family.
