The Argus headline for that match, ‘Miracles Can Still Happen,’ could easily have been recycled later that season, in March 1980, when Gary Williams’ late long-range shot produced another shock 1-0 victory over the Reds, this time at the Goldstone. It was a result that turned Clough into Forest Grump:
Those with even a rudimentary knowledge of football history know that Brian Clough and Peter Taylor managed both Brighton and Nottingham Forest in the 1970s. But, as the Midlands’ side's trophy-filled glory years reached a screeching halt, who can remember that Cloughie tried his hand as a pop star in 1981?
Surprisingly, the same can be said for Clough’s £1 million misfit Justin Fashanu who later went on to play for Brighton. Here is the Reds' striker's scintillating disco anthem ‘Do It Cos You Like It’ from 1982:
Fashanu is one of many players have turned out for both Brighton and Nottingham Forest down the years. Others include Barry Butlin, Neil Martin, Danny Wilson as well as Peter Grummitt, one of Albion's finest ever goalkeepers. It might have been galling for Brighton supporters that when Peter Ward finally made the front cover of Shoot! magazine in 1980, it was in a Forest shirt.
Wardy even had the temerity to score the winner against Brighton at the Goldstone in 1981/82.
Finally, and astonishingly, even Hollywood got in on the action that season. The 1982 movie Forced Vengeance, starring Chuck Norris, includes Gordon Smith’s fine goal in Brighton’s 2-1 defeat to Forest in September 1981.*
Hopefully, there is cause for that sublime phrase ‘Uh-oh, Brighton’s gonna score again!’ to be uttered a few times today!
