Brighton & Hove Albion women head coach John Donoghue admitted that his players looked anxious following today’s 3-0 defeat to ten-player Cardiff City.

Goals from Gwen Harries, Nia Jones and Kelly Aldridge ensured that the Bluebirds claimed all three points and Donoghue believes too many players under-performed.

He told seagulls.co.uk, “What disappoints me the most is that we asked the players to do certain things and they didn’t do them.“We seemed to be very anxious about what we were doing and the players needed to be much more confident in their own ability.
“Cardiff showed why they’re near the top of the table because their hunger, desire and willingness to back each other up was much better than us.
“Once they had a player sent off they became more defence-minded and tried to stop us playing, but you expect to have more of the ball with one extra player.”
Donoghue is now counting on his side to bounce back in next week’s Sussex derby against Lewes at Woodside Road.
He added, “I think Lewes will be a completely different game. It’s a local derby and the players need to remember that we can be the top team in the county if we beat them.”
