As Brighton supporters travel up to Huddersfield for today’s match, it’s time to set the time machine back to the days when Town still played at Leeds Road and Frank Worthington ruled the roost.*
In his heyday, ‘Worthy’ featured prominently in the Huddersfield side that clinched promotion to Division One in 1970, as did midfielder Colin Dobson. The latter went on loan to the Goldstone in 1972, adding a deft touch and invention to the promotion side of Pat Saward, himself a former Terriers midfielder.
Twelve years later, after seemingly playing for every other Football League club, Worthington arrived at the Goldstone for one very memorable season, 1984/85. From this draw with Manchester City, you can see his legendary ball-playing skills were very much still in evidence.
Even without his flamboyance, sharp-shooting Seagulls came out on top in the heart-stopping 4-3 victory over Huddersfield in November 1985. As this match report reveals, Mick Ferguson, Alan Biley, Eric Young and Dean Saunders also knew the way to the back of the net.
Albion boss at the time was Chris Cattlin who started his professional career with Huddersfield before successful spells with Coventry and Brighton. In May 1985, the Albion matchday programme ran an exquisite photo feature on the gaffer with his pet dog Smudge.

Kieran O’Regan and Chris Hutchings were team mates in Cattlin’s Brighton side. Both eventually played together with the Terriers later on in the 1980s. You can read a recent interview with Hutchings in Viva Brighton magazine, including the day he was accused of inciting a riot at the Goldstone.
Having blossomed as a midfielder, O’Regan was still at Huddersfield in 1992/93, a season where third-tier Brighton completed the league double over the Yorkshire club. Here’s Steve Foster’s tremendous header giving Albion the lead at the Goldstone in October 1992.
In the return match, Kurt Nogan and Clive Walker hit the target in Albion’s last ever victory at Huddersfield’s old ground.*
Happily, Albion’s 7-1 thrashing by Huddersfield in 2009 is probably too recent to be classed as retro, so let’s just pretend it didn’t happen...
