For fans of Albion nostalgia, it’s a case of history repeating as Brighton face Charlton Athletic this afternoon.

Two days before Christmas that season, Malcolm Poskett hit a sizzling hat-trick at the Valley past future Brighton manager Jeff Wood. A celebratory match report appeared in an Albion matchday programme a week later. Now, Wood isn’t the only ex-Seagulls manager to have links with the south London club. Through the cobwebs of the internet, you can still find a heartwarming message book from 1998 dedicated to Steve Gritt, the man who transformed the Albion team’s fortunes in its darkest hour.
Gritt’s four-season spell as joint manager of Charlton from 1991 was alongside a former Brighton captain. Alan Curbishley ended up serving in the Addicks hot seat for an impressive fifteen years. In their joint-reign, they brought in several Goldstone favourites such as Garry Nelson, Steve Gatting and John Robinson.
If it’s sensational managerial comings and goings you’re after, then give some love to the summer of 1981. Alan Mullery resigned as Brighton boss and eventually wound up at the Valley. The man who succeeded Mullers was Mike Bailey, who started his playing career at Charlton. Then, as the gaffer, he led the Valiants out of the Third Division in 1980/81. Shoot! magazine covered both sides of this ‘managerial swop’.
It was déjà vu of a different kind at the Goldstone in September 1990. Brighton beat Charlton 3-2 with goals from Small, Codner and Wilkins:
The very next game, just four days later, Brighton beat Portsmouth. Again, it was 3-2. Once again, the scorers were ...Small, Codner and Wilkins. Spooky!
In the return fixture with Charlton, a 2-1 away victory in February 1991, Small and Codner (sounding familiar?) got the goals:

Luckily, Wilkins didn’t add a further goal, and Charlton didn’t get another back, otherwise Mulder and Scully would have been knocking on Barry Lloyd’s door!
