As Brighton get ready for their clash with the Tykes, it’s time for another helping of vintage material to whet the appetite.*
When midfielder Ray McHale joined the Seagulls from Swindon in the summer of 1980, he found it hard to adjust to the speed of Division One football. As a result, he left for Barnsley for £60,000 in March that season, but before he left he gave a rare interview to the Albion v Aston Villa matchday magazine.*
Then, the following season, McHale helped to dump Brighton out of the League Cup. At Oakwell in November 1981, the top-flight Seagulls were trounced 4-1 by their Second Division opponents, with Mick McCarthy among the goals

Three years later, in October 1984, after the sides met at the Goldstone in a 0-0 stalemate, boss Chris Cattlin fined himself a week’s wages as he considered the performance so bad! In the Brighton team that day was current Barnsley boss Danny Wilson. He is best remembered by supporters for bringing so much vim and vigour to the Albion midfield. In Shoot! Magazine he talked up the Seagulls’ chances in 1986/87.
One player who did well against Barnsley was Bryan Wade in 1991/92. Here is the pint-sized striker finishing smartly in the August sunshine to help the Seagulls towards a 2-1 victory at Oakwell.
Even better was this fabulous, acrobatic hook on the turn by Wade in the return fixture at the Goldstone in January 1992.
Finally, QueenSpark’s Brighton & Hove Photographic Collection site includes a beautiful colour photo from Brighton’s 4-1 home win over Barnsley in April 1969.*In action are Dave Armstrong, Alex Dawson and John Napier. Had Napier followed the swashbuckling style of Dawson, the Barnsley keeper would surely have been bundled into the net a split second after this shot was snapped!
