Couldn't see this uploaded anywhere else and found it on the end of my Goodbye Goldstone DVD so here is the MOTD coverage of the FA Cup game at Aldershot.

Why aren't there more players called Chewins? I remember trying to hack the computers in Epcot to find the result of this game. A kindly staff member took pity on me and got it out of lockdown mode so I could visit the BBC site.

One of a number of great away-days that season.

Seem to recall spending a bit of time on the terrace that day avoiding coins that were being thrown by the home support.

The team was full of attacking play and goals - a bit different to this season sadly.

Aldershot were only Isthmian League at the time. The BBC cameras were there as this game was seen as a potential upset by some. As things panned out, it was a fairly comfortable victory. Was also a fair bit of disturbance that day. Remember passing a pub near the ground that had been converted to alfresco due to a lack of windows.

Full of attacking play? A midfield of 3 central midfielders and a full-back. The only recognised attackers in that team were Hart and Zamora. If we played with such a defensive set-up as that this season then there would have been hell to play.

Great game, great day. The cameras turned up hoping to see a shock....6-1 I think it was, or maybe 6-2. Was always fun behind the goal at Aldershot.

Yes, full of attacking play. Despite only playing one up front, goals were contributed from all over the pitch. That game illustrates my point with 2 defenders (Watson 2pens, Wicks), 2 midfielders (Carpenter, Oatway) and 1 striker (Zamora) getting the goals. The team may have been set up with a defensive bias, but they were not afraid to attack.

By comparison this season, we play 1 up front and seem to be reliant on keeping things tight defensively, nicking a goal, then shutting up shop. This has given us a great clean sheet record (18 so far), but there have only been 9 games this season where we have scored more than 1, compared to 32 in which we have either scored 0 or 1. Hardly sets the league alight. There has been little contribution on the scoresheet from all over the pitch and our lone striker has only 9 goals to his name (admittedly from only around 20 games).

I just wish we would just take games by the scruff of the neck and bang in some goals like the team of 2000/1!

A slightly starry eyed version of events. We were playing ALDERSHOT and scored 3 goals from set pieces.

We "took games by the scruff of the neck" because we had the best player in the (FOURTH!) division up front, and thus relatively limited players like Hart could burn it down the line and plonk the ball on Zamora's head.

If we were playing teams in League 2 with our dead ball specialists on form (Lopez, LuaLua?) and Ulloa up front we'd SMASH the division.

But we don't.

In fact, I can't believe I'm bothering with this argument. It's stupid. Yes, we are negative at the moment, but that's largely due to the lack of firepower in our squad and the quality of our opponents.

Actually, I've just been thinking about this a bit more.

In the then Division 3, the likes of Oatway, Carpenter and Rogers could and did hit the net.

In the then Division 2, that midfield struggled for goals. Most of our wins were 1-0 Zamora. We had to bring in Junior Lewis to freshen things up, and many considered our football dull (with notable exceptions e.g. Steve Melton tearing Reading a new one).

Then in Division 1 where we are now, the midfield couldn't cope, the defence couldn't cope. It took a switch to 5 at the back with wing backs to get us playing attacking football again, although bar thumping Wolves I don't recall us scoring too many, and still it was mainly Zamora we relied on.

Is a switch to 5-4-1 needed rather than 4-5-1? Would that be deemed too negative? Does anyone play 5 at the back anymore?

Imagine:

Tom K
Bruno Greer Dunk Upson Ward
Buckley Stephens Ince Caskey
Ulloa

Would we tear teams apart? Nah.

Not enough quality in the midfield or up front to play attacking football at this level, end of story.
