Has the Crimea referendum opened the door for other areas of Europe to declare sovereignty? Personally I'm all for less centralised governments and more emphasis on local politics.

Republic of Sussex anyone?

No. Venice arranged it first. San Marino seems to do well as a country of convenience within Italy.

No doubt Venice will soon be competing in both the Euros and the World Cup, and also have a club in the Champions League and Europa league, if they vote for independence.

If they restart the old Doge's Palace/Bridge of Sighs/prison set-up, fine with me.

If Venice becomes independent they will build a F1 track, and Italy will then be able to host three Grand Prix.

They'll need wet weather tyres though.

Catalunya and the Basque Country will be keeping half an eye on this one, methinks.

Don't worry , if the EU and the US (they will poke their noses in if there are any commercial implications) don't like the idea it will be illegal !

Find it hard to understand how a referendum which overwhelmingly votes for independence can be "undemocratic and illegal". Crimea is only connected to Ukraine by a small piece of land and its history is as a part of Russia, so its not like its been annexed by an invading force.

Interested to see US imposing sanctions on Alex Salmon next year!

Quite agree , I am sure if someone wanted to take over Hawaii , the US army would soon retaliate and if you read the history of Hawaii it's practically similar to Crimea .
