Whatever your politics you cannot deny he was a great man, my favourite Benn quote, which perhaps they should tell all school leavers. "Try to be a road sign rather than a weathercock"

I had the privilege to hear him speak once, a very principled man.

A true Gentleman in more than one way. Saw him a few years back for an evening in the Pavilion on Worthing Pier. A delightful evening. A fine representative for Old Labour in my eyes.

Even as a Tory Boy i have no regrets in saying this is sad news ...A true political giant......Politics desperately needs more people like Mr Benn.

Always thought he was an old fraud. Converted from Anthony Wedgewood Benn from a privileged background to bitter, yet articulate, Tony Benn the Left wing Labour activist.

A great politician and a lovely man. I've never known an MP talk so much sense.

Fantastic speaker. Was lucky enough to hear him at the fringe meeting immediately after he marginally lost the deputy leadership to Healey in 81, when Kinnock stabbed him in the back. More recently, heard him at Charleston.

Even if you didn't agree with all he said, he came across as incredibly reasonable and persuasive in person as a truly principled man.

Here we go...

Why should being born into wealth preclude you from having political beliefs that are about supporting those less fortunate, about creating a society fairer for all?

It's not where you're from, it's where you're at.

One of the few polititions that I have truly admired. When I first started taking any interest in politics he was a rare dissenting voice amongst the right wing avalanche engulfing - it seemed to me at the time - any whimper from the left. He never wilted though and stood toe to toe with his political adversaries and the cruel right wing press.
RIP Mr Benn.

A man of principle, a brilliant speaker, and by all accounts a devoted and loving family man. He really cared about parliamentary democracy as well as socialism, and he had a huge understanding of British history, from the perspective of the working class, rather than the "kings and queens" variety. Politics and the country will be worse off without him.
