Asylum Seekers - The Australian Way

What do you guys make of Australia's policy for sea bound Asylum seekers?

I find it hard to believe that a civilized would treat people this way and it makes me very sad to be part of it. A friend of mine recently came back from Manus Island where he was involved in counseling the detainees and the little he told me sounded quite horrific. I know Julie Bishop
is in the UK at present and managed to lie her way through an interview (second link down).

Most interesting to me is that since the government told us that they would not be releasing information about any asylum seeker boats that enter Australian waters there have been no reported asylum seeker boats in Australian waters. How did that happen?

Essentially, if you are an asylum seeker that has arrived 'illegally' by boat. You are taken to a detention camp and held there until your application is reviewed. This can take years and children are also kept in these camps. The camps are often on islands around Australia, and the conditions are pretty poor.

In addition to this, they are also used as a political football with politicians demonizing asylum seekers in order to get votes (lots of words like 'floods of asylum seekers' are used, which is frankly a load of old bollocks, more like a small trickle)

essentially we either tow the boats back to Indonesian waters or asylum seekers are taken to camps on pacific islands (Naru, Christmas Islan and manus island Papua New Guinea) where they are processed (or not depending on your source) and either sent back to where they came from or settled on the Island in question (PNG mainly). The government has said that no people who come by boat will be settled in Australia.

The UN and have criticized the camps and the policy and many international laws have been broken in the process but as we know the UN are pretty toothless at the best of times)

This is a very potted version and the links will fill in the gaps a little.
