Expecting 70 yard cross field balls to feet.

I think some of our fans have been playing too much FIFA, and also forget how good their view is compared to the players. The level of FURY that was shown when some of our defenders DIDNT make 70 yard sweeping cross field balls directly in line with one of our players runs was staggeringly over the top.

YES, we want them to release the ball quickly when a break is on, but the standards expected are frankly baffling at times. NONE of our players are good enough to play for Barcelona. I think some of us need to remember this.

Kudos to Bruno for playing one such MAJESTIC pass out to the left wing though.

I just commented on that pass on another thread. Wasn't it Lopez? Terrific pass whoever it was

Agree with this.

Very frustrating when some overweight 50 year old thinks that they are correct to be criticising our players for not pinging Gerrard-like crossfield balls all the time (just because it looks like such passes should be on from the comfort of WSU/ESU...)

Just remember the Withdean years when we used to applaud players for having the vision to pass the ball slightly forward to where a team mate could run onto, rather than passing directly to their feet.

Also, players used to get applause for being able to trap a high cross field pass instead of letting it out for a throw-in.

More modest expectations, I guess.

Bottom line, EXACTLY how many saves did their keeper make today?

Think you've got the wrong thread fella. Your comment has nothing whatsoever to do with my OP.

That's something that annoys me about the fans around me. We're down in one of the wings so often have a spare man in front of us, with fans expecting a crossfield ball. The problem that I see with that (before even dealing with the quality of players we have) is, a) the player might not be seen from the other side of the pitch, b) the ball has to either be pelted at him so hard accuracy is lost, and it's harder to control so that the ball gets to him before a covering defender gets there, or the ball has to have the pace taken out so it can be controlled more easily, but that allows defenders to cover and he is no longer free.

West Stand Upper syndrome. People shout for players to pass from wing to wing all of the time.

On the rare occasion I watch top flight football, one thing I'm always impressed by our close control.

When these boomers do go sailing across the pitch, not only are they perfect for the recipient, they control and move it excellently.

The same can't be said for many other Prem and international players.

I used to enjoy Adam Virgo's long cross-field "passes" from a defensive position :lolol:

Every game, I am awe of the close control, the trapping, the first touches dispayed by our players from long balls and from well-struck shorter balls. 15 years ago, we would never have believed we would be taking such skills for granted.
