Simon Rusk says Brighton were the masters of their own downfall during their 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield United.
Albion under-18s’ recent good form was brought to an undeserved end at Withdean by the Blades and Rusk felt his team should have come away with the minimum of a point.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “Sheffield United had setup with a very hard-working two banks of four, a very aggressive team that played direct football, but actually we didn’t lose the battle and it wasn’t about us not being able to deal with their attacking threat.
“It was that we gifted them two goals; one from a corner and one where we tried to play out.
“So their style of play didn’t beat us we almost beat ourselves. We should have sneaked a 1-0 or at least got a draw out the game.
“During the first half for two thirds of the pitch we moved the ball really well and I was very happy but we struggled to unlock that final ball into the box or get that shot on target.”

United established a lead after just ten minutes and secured the points in the second half despite Jordan Maguire-Drew’s headed response.
The Seagulls fought hard to find an equaliser but injuries to Meyers and Jamie Horncastle meant Brighton finished the game with ten men having used all their substitutes, and they were unable to complete the comeback.*

ALBION: Smith, Courtney [Meyers 64 [Tilley 70]], Barnett, Collar, Horncastle, Dallison, Tighe, Wiltshire [Pring 60], Rowe-Hurst, Hutchinson, Maguire-Drew.*Subs not used: Wray, White.
