Brighton & Hove City Firefighters Petition

The above is a petition from Brighton & Hove City Firefighters.

If you live in Brighton & Hove, there is a proposal to reduce the fire engines in the City.

Reducing the number of fire engines within the City from five to four will lead to slower response times, less personnel, less equipment and fewer home and school fire safety visits. These proposed cuts will cost lives. Savings must not be made by putting the public and fire fighters lives at risk.

Thank you.

So it's those and 5 standard Fire Engines then ? and what about the small fire station near the Marina ? its very confusing, and just 16 Fireman to operate it all ? I'm still confused.

The five fire engines are the two pumps (1 extended rescue & 1 water tender) at Preston circus, two at Hove (again, 1 extended rescue & 1 water tender) and one at Roedean (extended rescue). These are the basic pumping appliances that would respond to house fires, RTCs, chemical spills, animal rescues, entrapments etc and the like. The other appliances listed are specialist vehicles with more limited application; the aerial ladder platform is, as the name suggests a very large (30m) ladder, for rescues from height and aerial firefighting and the High Volume Pump is the behemoth that was recently sent to help out with the floods. The current watch strengths across the city are 15 at P Circus, 13 at Hove and 7 at Roedean, with four watches per station. The proposed cuts suggest the removal of one of the five pumping appliances from the city, plus major and as yet unspecified workforce reductions.

A house fire attracts an attendance of two or three fire engines, which will provide the correct number of personnel to set up a safe system of work. One of those five city engines seems destined to go, presumably from either Brighton or Hove. If you live in an area currently served by whichever station loses a pump, it will take longer for the second pump to arrive. If, as happens fairly regularly, two incidents happen simultaneously in the city environs, you'll have to wait even longer.

So thats 35 firefighters and 5 engines, per watch. How many times in the last 3 years have all the resources been depleted?

No, there are only five fire engines. The high volume pump isn't used for firefighting and the aerial ladder platform is only ever used in conjunction with a fire engine and doesn't have any pumping capability. Might look like semantics, but there really are only five standard fire engines.

Can't help there, I'm afraid. I guess the union and management would probably give you two very different answers. I just know from personal experience that it does happen and I guess any reduction in numbers will inevitably lead to it happening more often. The massive, swingeing budget cuts are a fact, but cutting one of the county's busiest appliances might not be the smartest move.

Not wishing to fan the flames but what proof is there this will not result in a better all round service?

Since most homes now have smoke alarms and fire systems in business premises and alike, public safety has never been better in regard to fire.

I'd be interested to know how many fires were attended to by the Brighton fire brigade in the last year.

Of course cutting services too far will hurt but at the same time you can't have an ambulance, fire engine and police car stationed in every street.

Fire and Rescue Services are typically utilised on 999/blue light work about 5% of available time. This is why management are constantly looking for things for additional things for firefighters to do and why FBU are constantly fighting to protect Grey Book regulations to be protected. This is why I left front-line firefighting in 2013 after 10 years service.
