Sol Campbell - Race card played?

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Who was captain for the vast majority of his caps? Beckham and Gerrard? I reckon he would have been better than them. I'm always in favour of a defensive player being captain - they tend to be better equipped for the role.

A shame the FA declined to comment.

Who, ultimately, makes the decision? The coach at the time or the FA?

Beckham I would imagine though my memory isn't great, he would have been a better leader possibly yes, we'll never know but to put it down to race... That's quite some statement to make.

So he reckons that those in power sat down and agreed that "We could make Sol Campbell Captain, but he's black and we're not having that." Absolutely ridiculous. Cry harder Sol you whinging insincere rabble rouser.

Maybe he's right. But making a controversial comment like that, that will be splashed about all the media and will no doubt be make over 10 pages of race argument on here. That'll help shift a few more copies for a dwindling football celebrity

Tony Adams, then Alan Shearer.

No fan of either, but if you believe the captain should be a vocal, up and at 'em sort of player, both would have been better choices than Sulzeer. (I always thought his name was Solvedt, just wiki'd it and it's Sulzeer. Never heard of anyone called that before)

Yep Tony Adams for a year Shearer for 3 years(I believe) Beckham for 6 years and John Terry for 1 year, plus a few other players getting the band on odd games.

Beckham is the only one in my opinion who wasn't captain material and maybe Sol could claim to be in front of him. Always thought Beckham got it for his off field status rather than his leadership skills on pitch.

Maybe he is right but he is effectively accusing every England Manager he played under of being racist, and every Captain of not being as deserving of the role as he was, so I expect to see some backtracking in the coming days.

I think if Ledley King had not had such bad injury problems he would have beaten the black record of 7 captain's caps shared by Ince and Rio.

Sol is a ****, great footballer but still a ****.

Sol Campbell has always had a chip on his shoulder and played the race card, unfortunately he is one of many. You very rarely hear the likes of Lennox Lewis, Chris Eubank or Nigel Benn or cricketers saying the same it must be something about footballers

Sol Campbell had always been over sensitive. One of those people who thinks the world is out to get him. And when things don't go his way he finds someone to blame. Not being England captain had nothing to do with the colour of his skin but because there were better 'leaders' instead of him.
If Campbell had been born white and ginger he'd blame that.
If a white player complained that a black player was picked over him because of skin colour the world would be up in arms, mainly because totally unfounded. Why Campbell feels he can say these things and effectively brand the FA and every England manager racist is beyond me.
The only person who seems to an issue with other peoples skin colour is Campbell.
Get over if you sad bitter man

His main bugbear seems to be Michael Owen getting the nod for captain over him.
No-one will be interested in his book anyway apart from Arsenal and Pompey fans.
Outside those circles he has earned minimal respect in the football world although I give it to him he was an accomplished defender for England in his prime.
