I have no data to back this up but it seems to me that there are more goals being scored from deflections than ever before. If players are becoming more athletic and defenders close down space more quickly than in years past then it would seem to be logical that this would lead to more incidents involving deflections in the penalty area. We seem to be falling victim to a fair few lately. As I say, it's just a feeling I get and I could well be wrong. I often am.
However, if this is the case then this would seem to suggest that there is a case to be made for simply getting shots away more often. Unless you happen to be Arsenal the chances of walking in the perfect goal are fairly slim.
There's probably some coaching wonk somewhere who would be only too glad to study this sort of thing.
Any thoughts?
