I stayed in Casa Montani in Rome. Great location, and amazing boutique hotel / B&B. Really good service, lovely breakfast and make great restaurant recommendations off the beaten track.

I did look recently though and sadly very booked up and quite expensive, but then again Rome is.

Rome - Grand Hotel de la Minerva. Small, classy, not cheap, but a stunning location in the centre, literally next door to the Pantheon, brilliant rooftop cocktail terrace and restaurant looking over central Rome in all directions. All the big sights (Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, trevi fountain, St peters square all within easy walking distance. Forum, Circus Maximus and Colosseum only a short cheap cab ride away, so you can avoid public transport (and pick pockets) easily.

if she's worth it, go for it. Get a keen deal through expedia.co.uk.

I stayed in the Europa e Regina right on the Grand Canal Venice. Very very nice.
It had the best toilet in the world. Sitting on the pan, window open looking out over the terracotta tiles and hearing the gondoliers singing as they went past the hotel.

If I ever go back to Venice I hope I won't remember that remark and stand by the gondoliers wondering who might be close by sat on the bog that very moment listening.

Hotel Kette was fine for us. www.hotelkette.com/‎

If you are staying in Venice, make sure you go to St Mark's Square after 9 in the evening. The day trippers have all left and you almost get the square to yourself. Have one drink sitting outside one of the cafés and you get to listen to all of the orchestras around the square for the rest of the evening. Magical on a warm evening.

In Venice, we stayed at the Hotel Danieli. Brilliant location - just over the Bridge of Sighs and right next to the Doge's Palace. Also a set for the second Casino Royale. Sooooo..... Expensive.

Stayed in a hotel near the station which at £100 a night was quite expensive for what it was.

Enjoyed Rome, very good place to go and if you have time there is a cracking restaurant just to the left at the bottom of the Spanish Steps but cash only.

Two really good value hotels in good locations I've stayed at in the past (a few years ago mind) after a fair bit of research pre-trip. Well worth a look on Tripadvisor to see if they're still recommended:

Hotel Rafaello, Via Urbana, Rome.
Locanda Sant'Agostin, Venice - excellent spot, but tricky to find.
