The Albion masses set off for Liverpool more in hope than expectation.

We all know what happened. Can't believe it was 31 years ago.

Happy day. We were at a party in London and about 3am decided to drive to Liverpool later in the morning (none of us thought the driver may still be pissed - a different time). We were expecting to have to queue for the Kop and keep our heads down - but on arrival we got restricted view seats in the main stand. What a day.

Jesus, 31 years?!!!! Drove up there in the back of a friends mini, if I did that now they'd need an ambulance to get me out! What a day, we did ride our luck especially 2nd half but I've never seen so many people stunned into silence and that was just our support at the end!

Why didn't you use the front seat to drive?

As for that day, was my first trip to Anfield, more out of the history of the place rather than expectation but what a day. Some 9 year old scrote offering to protect our car whilst we were at the football. Still remember to this day that walking past the two up two down terrace houses near Anfield and every one had an alarm box! That famous Liverpool community spirit obviously didn't extend to your own neighbours.

They don't have alarms now as they're all derelict & empty. The area's a right dump.

I used to live in a street four down from the Kop. When I drove down there recently, it wasn't empty nor were the other houses nearby. Some of the streets are derelict though, I agree. It's a VERY rough area.

We went out on the lash in Brighton and got back to Littlehampton at 3.00am on the Sunday and got on the coach at 5.30 am still pissed. Had a few more sneaky cans on the way up in our Kings Of The Road Coach and had a great day out !!
Sadly one of the lads with us that day is no longer with us and it's his Funeral Today

RIP Andy Wills

Goldstone Rapper's highlights (the game was never on TV, this was apparently compiled from footage from the Anfield cameras with Radio Brighton commentary added). The quality isn't great, but it's worth watching because we were absolute class that day against the best team in Europe - who desperately wanted to win the FA Cup that season as it was the only competition they hadn't won under Bob Paisley. A thrilling cup-tie and a fully-deserved victory.

Part of that is reportedly down to Liverpool FC. They were slated in a newspaper article a while back. They've been buying up houses around the ground for years in the hope of redeveloping Anfield (the stadium not the area) but as always, there are a few residents who've lived there their entire lives who refuse to sell up. There have been big issues with the prices LFC were offering, and essentially the area has been left to rack and ruin while the club wait for the remaining residents to relent (or, not to put too fine a point on it, die).

That was the gist of it. I do remember loads of terraces with steel shutters on the windows and a general feeling of total depression around the place. And, needless to say, lots of gobby scally kids giving you abuse as you turn up at the ground (this was the cup game where we lost 6-1).

Yep, that's the story. I remember two friends of mine from Sussex visiting once who asked if there were any decent chippys around. I directed them to the main road, Oakfield Road, where there are several Chinese take-aways. They returned without any food a few minutes later and when I asked them why, they rather ashamedly replied that they'd felt scared lol!

You get used to living in an area like that, although I always took care to look behind me walking the streets, particularly at night. I didn't enjoy living in that area although it was pretty cool to live that close to a major football ground. I often went to a match with mates who were Liverpool fans but although I enjoyed the atmosphere and the game I always found myself wishing I was at the Goldstone or Withdean.

Looking at Tom Finneys advert in that programme makes me wonder what exactly is a ' re-winding specialist' ?
