We respected them, but we weren’t afraid and just played our normal game"
Inigo Calderon
Inigo Calderon admitted his frustration as Albion face a fifth round replay against Hull thanks to Yannick Sagbo’s strike four minutes from time.
Leonardo Ulloa had put Albion on course for a notable Premier League scalp, but Sagbo’s late equaliser means the two sides will battle it out again at the KC Stadium next Monday.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “You want to show that you can play against a Premier League club. We did that for 85 minutes and were so close to winning, but credit to them as well for coming back.
“We knew how good they were; they were a physical side when we played them last year. Now they have even better players of Premier League quality that are really good. So they now have both the physical and technical sides of their game.
“It was a difficult game for us; we tried our best, but I’m really upset because we were nearly there.
“We respected them, but we weren’t afraid and just played our normal game. We know we have to be at our best to win any game, whether it’s against Port Vale or a Premier League club. That’s the most important thing.”
Despite the result, the stand-in Albion skipper highlighted the experience some of the younger players are gaining from this cup run as the main positive to take from the game.
He added, “The younger players did really well; we performed well against a really good side.
“I think they (Hull) played their strongest side, which is good for these young players. It wasn’t easy for them playing against Port Vale in League One and then a Premier League club. But they are performing well in every game and that’s important.” *
