Not sure if this has been posted before but why can't the club feature the words of the first two verses of SBTS in every matchday programme? There seems to be a reluctance to scroll them down the big screens Karaoke style so this may be a more practical suggestion?

A more practical suggestion is for fans to learn the words.

People still buy programmes? Why not print the words on here for us from memory?

There are a lot of long time fans around me who don't sing the words, whether they know them or not I don't know but the whole stadium singing SBTS properly in unison would be incredible.

That's plausible for the frequent visitors, but if there's kids etc that go along it might help them join in with the singing.

Can you imagine Liverpool having to print the words of You'll Never Walk Alone? Or Leeds Marching on Together? Hell, even Millwall and Let 'em Come. Brighton fans should know their clubs anthem.

Having to make the clubs song into a massive version of karaoke would give even more ammunition to those who point out how many plastic and new fans we have picked up since moving to The Amex.

Here you go, only took me one minute to find. Feel free to print and learn. I won't even charge.

1st verse
Now is the time for marching, Now let your hearts be gay,
Hark to the merry bugles Sounding along our way.
So let your voices ring, my boys, And take the time from me,
And I’ll sing you a song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea!

Chorus
For We're the men from Sussex, Sussex by the Sea.
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful men are we;
And when you go to Sussex, Whoever you may be,
You may tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea!

Refrain
Oh Sussex, Sussex by the Sea!
Good old Sussex by the Sea!
You may tell them all we stand or fall,
For Sussex by the Sea.

2nd verse
Up in the morning early, Start at the break of day;
March till the evening shadows Tell us it's time to stay.
We're always moving on, my boys, So take the time from me,
And sing this song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus & Refrain

3rd verse
Sometimes your feet are weary, Sometimes the way is long,
Sometimes the day is dreary, Sometimes the world goes wrong;
But if you let your voices ring, Your care will fly away,
So we'll sing a song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus & Refrain

4th verse
Light is the love of a soldier, That's what the ladies say -
Lightly he goes a wooing, Lightly he rides away.
In love and war we always are As fair as fair can be,
And a soldier boy is the ladies’ joy
In Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus & Refrain

5th verse
Far o'er the seas we wander, Wide thro’ the world we roam;
Far from the kind hearts yonder, Far from our dear old home;
But ne'er shall we forget, my boys, And true we'll ever be
To the girls so kind that we left behind
In Sussex by the Sea.

Chorus & Refrain

Silly silly you. You can't ask a question like that when there are so many uberfans lurking. Unless you can fart the words while having a bath you might as well support the mob up the road.

(you are right btw)

I think one of the main problems is that the 1st verse in particular is far too dated - it will never catch on.

"Now let your hearts be gay" and "hark to the merry bugles" may have been appropriate 100 years ago, but today it sounds a bit odd.

'Stand or Fall' sounds even more dated, but there it is on a 70-foot banner.

Think of the poor sods who sing 'While the red, red robin goes bob, bob, bobbing along...' or some cockerneys singing about non-stop fellatio on Michael Jackson's chimpanzee.

I would actually skip the first two verses and go for verse 3 and a chorus. That could be learnt by most. Even though my favourite verse is 5...

Completely agree, it worked when gay meant happy but it's just a little awkward these days.

It should be adapted;

Now is the time for football,
Now let your hearts bleed blue,
Hark to the merry bugles,
Sounding the whole way through,
So let your voices ring, my boys,
And take the time from me,
And I’ll sing you a song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea!

I don't know all the words, should I be banished from all Brighton matches?

Nice re-write. :thumbsup:

But it's still too male-centric, and you haven't done anything with the merry bugles reference.

The military and farming themes could also do with a re-write. I would love to hear what a fully updated version of the lyrics, that truly embody these times in an uplifting way, would be like.

Interesting! I tried not to offend the Uberfans by suggesting a change to the words, I thought quite a few people had a nodding acquaintance with the first two verses and it's true, 25,000 people singing the words would be truly amazing and a considerable improvement on "der der de deder der der der, der der de der de der"!!! And the reason why Liverpool fans all know the words to "you'll never walk alone", I would suggest, is because when it's played the words are sung by Gerry so they just have to sing along (+ the words are simpler). Oh well, just a thought but as ever any attempt at a way forward with GOSBTS always becomes mired down with alternative opinions, versions, tradition and controversy.

2014 is the centenary of the start of the First World War , if it wasn't for the men and boys from Sussex laying down their lives this forum would be Nordstandplatz Chat.
