Just had a mate of mine on the blower, left at 4am to go up norf. They have nothing to play for this season except the FA Cup and made 7 changes, he's well p**sed off.

Let that be a warning, we must play our strongest side on Monday night

The thought of a £70M or £80M cheque for Saints finishing mid table in the league should soften the blow.

The fans don't get a cheque for millions of pounds. All they get are days out and memories.

Saints have let them down, on this occasion.

It's poor form when a side with little chance of getting relegated and equally little chance of getting in to Europe still field a very weakened side in the Cup. They are disrespecting the competition and their fans - it's a long bloody way from Southampton to Sunderland.

It's a touch different for us though. We do actually have something to play for in the league. Equally with the best will in the world, we have pretty much zero chance of winning the thing.

Just like Wigan had no chance in the Final last season :)

I'm really surprised that Saints did that. They had nothing to play for except the cup and a realistic chance of getting to the final or maybe even winning it. What must be even more galling is that Sunderland played a weakened team too, so if Saints had put out their regular side they would probably have won fairly comfortably.

As for us, with Wigan and Sunderland winning yesterday the draw is really opening up. There is now guaranteed to be either three other championship clubs or two championship and one league one club, plus in Sunderland a beatable premier league team. So if we get through we'll have a greater chance of landing a winnable tie than we will one where we'd expect to lose. There's even a fair chance that if we were to progress we could get a championship club in the quarters AND the semis. And if that were to happen it would probably mean facing man city, arsenal or liverpool in the final...meaning European football next season.

It's a mouth watering prospect...a cup final and European football. That's the kind of glory we dream about isn't it? So, I really, really hope we play a strong team and go for it.

Almost forgot, as an added bonus if we could get to the semi finals, surely it can only benefit the team from playing a major game in front of 80-90,000 people at Wembley just a few weeks before hopefully playing the play off final there. It certainly can't hurt and is almost definitely beneficial to get experience of the whole big game wembley occasion.

So it makes sense in terms of the purely footballing side of things, the financial side and the glory side to try our damndest to get through. There's no downside that I can think of. Lets GO FOR IT!

That said, I guess we'll now play a reserve side and get thrashed:(

A win against Hull will give us £180k prize money, a guaranteed £250k TV money for the QF and whatever else from tickets/merchandising etc.. That's something we surely can't afford to take lightly.

Sunderland played a weakened team too, but no-one pays attention to that when you win. Shows how important Schneiderlin and Cork are to Southampton. Those 2 give them their balance in midfield. Southampton's worst run of form during the season was when Schneiderlin was injured.

Sunderland had good reason to make changes with Wes Brown out and others needing a rest before their next run of important games, but they didn't field an inexperienced team.

Shampton on the other hand played a poor dev squad and let their 800 travelling supporters down big time, and although they are safe in the Prem their season is now over. Pochettino looked like a manager who has lost interest and on his way out.

Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert both played. It's all well and good blaming the manager for fielding an under-strength side, that's easy work when you lose in those circumstances. But that's where the senior players should earn their money by supporting the younger players. Where's the heat towards them for not performing and thereby exposing the younger players and their manager?

The Guardian hit the nail on the head:

With Poyet having made nine changes to a team battling relegation and already in the Capital One Cup final, the stage looked set for Southampton to canter into the quarter-final. Inexplicably given their comfortable league position, Mauricio Pochettino made six changes and, significantly, a strange performance from his players fell some way short of high octane. Sunderland played quite well but, by semi surrendering, Southampton effectively ushered them towards both the sixth round and mounting end-of-season fixture congestion.

Evidently not entirely heartbroken, Pochettino was so eager to head for Newcastle airport and a return flight to the south coast that he did not bother addressing the media. "We're not disappointed to be out of the FA Cup," acknowledged Jesús Pérez, his assistant before, hastily, adding the rider, "Just a little bit sad."

Had a look at the stains team from yesterday. It wasn't that weak and had plenty of prem experience. I didn't see the match so can't comment on the performance but the way the tv pundits are bleating about it, I imagine it wasn't that clever.
With a crowd of 16,777 it sounds like the Sunderland supporters didn't take it too seriously either.

Two senior players cannot carry an inexperienced team. The FA Cup was the only competition they had left this season and they should have blended the other members of their squad in for their remaining league games, not this Cup.

The Shampton fans are quite rightly up in the air about yesterday and I can completely understand why.

It wasn't that inexperienced a team though. There were several players in that team with plenty of Premier League experience, albeit some who have recently been out of favour. If Rickie Lambert hadn't missed an open goal from 2 yards out in the 2nd half and earned Southampton a replay, we wouldn't be having this discussion. The team Pochettino selected should have been good enough to beat a team fighting relegation, that it wasn't is down to the players having the wrong attitude on the day.

Didn't we play weakened teams when we face Port Vale and Reading and still won?
