It's a suspicious package at the Army Recruitment Centre. Not the only one either - bomb disposal also called to centres in Oxford and Slough

Part of the delay is the wait for the bomb disposal unit - it's on its way from Aldershot

Reading had one on Tuesday as well at army career office. Linked to another similar package sent to Chatham offices.

Yes, much better to let a few people get blown up.

At the time of posting I was unaware of any other sites being targeted. It reminded me of around two years ago when Sainsburys and much of the Vogue Gyratory area were evacuated for over 5 hours after someone claimed to have a bomb. This 'bomber' turned out to be a drunk person locked in the toilets.

No 7 bus seems to have ceased to exist!!!
From the Argus site:

Service 7 - Eastbound are currently diverted via Upper Glouceter Road, Dyke Road and Imperial Arcade. Westbound are diverted directly up Imperial Arcade, Dyke Road to which they will resume normal route from the Seven Dials we cannot currently serve Brighton Station from this direction.

Statement released on behalf of the South East Counter Terrorism Unit:

The South East Counter Terrorism Unit is currently investigating reports of a number of suspect packages found at Army Careers offices today (Thursday 13 February).

The contents of the package are being assessed and MoD bomb disposal units have been called, as is routine with any suspect package.

The packages were found at Army Careers offices in St Giles, Oxford, Queensmere Shopping Centre, Slough, and Queen's Road, Brighton.

Suspect packages were found at a number of Army Careers offices this week in Aldershot (12/2) and Reading and Chatham (11/2).

Detective Superintendent Stan Gilmour, of the South East Counter Terrorism Unit, said: "Because suspicious packages were found at various locations yesterday notes were sent out to all the Army Careers offices as well as the Post Office asking staff to be extra vigilant and look out for any suspect packages."

Sainsbury's is on the whole less likely to be a target for extremists of this nature than an army recruitment office, no?

Packages found in Chatham and Reading are now being described as "small but viable explosives"

Just as a matter of interest, why do we need specialist army recruiting offices in town centres anyway? Most other employers in the public and private sectors seem to manage to recruit their staff without going to these lengths, e.g. by advertising or using generic recruitment offices. Seems a bit archaic to me.

Becuase working for the Armed Forces is a not a normal job. I presume the people in these offices are actually in the Armed forces so can best advise people who come in for information.

What an extraordinary spelling of Serious. I believe you to be a foreign agent working against north stand chat and as we speak counter terrorist operatives are about to swoop and cordon off this thread :)

Not convinced to be honest -- all jobs have something that's different about them. Some of the things that are different about being in the army, like higher than average risk of death, not being able to go on strike, likelihood of extended periods of foreign travel, wearing a uniform, poor wages, etc are also found in other jobs to a greater or lesser extent.
Still not clear to me why you need a town centre recruiting office (they nearly always seem to be completely empty of customers --well the one in Queens Road does anyway) to get all this across, or indeed why you need a recruitment office in order to meet an existing member of the army prior to signing on the dotted line -- that could easily be arranged in other ways.
