The goverment does have the power too extend licensing hours nationwide for special occasions. It did that for the royal wedding and Diamond jubilee, but says it won't do that for the football.
The British pub and beer association are very angry, they say that could mean lost revenue of £20,000,000.
They are appealing against the decision.

My local will stick two fingers up at the bloody goverment and show the England matches.
If the plod decide to uphold the Tory tosses decision then theyre have a bloody class war on their hands.
Up the revolution.

Won't make any difference to most. I've already applied for, and will be granted temporary entertainment licenses from my local authority.

Everyone else will do the same.

This is a non-story. Licensing is now undertaken at the local level and councils will decide whether pubs can stay open later on a case-by-case basis.

I thought as from a few years ago pubs could stay open 24 hours if they wished?

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
All the more reason not to watch football in pubs, if only to avoid the braying "ingeeeeerrrrrrrland" get knocked out.

This will only impact one England game, the one Vs Italy, which kicks off at 11pm. Most pubs in Brighton have a late licence on Saturday nights anyway. Can't see this being an issue to be honest.

Not as simple as that! Very few local authorities will grant a 24 hour premises licence. Westminster has a couple, but they are very rare. The Police also have a say.

Oh right. I suppose it depends on the area. Residents etc?

Westminster council are wankers. They rarely allow pubs to be open after 11.

Blame the Tories again :wozza:

It was the Lib Dems and a Norman Baker who said no.

Plenty of interest in other teams too, not just England!

It's no surprise, the government bends over backwards for big businesses but readily allows scores of pubs to shut down nationwide every week. The World Cup could be a massive boost to them, but they just don't care.

Many more pubs will be closing now the Premier League have won a crucial court case last week on copyright infringement because landlords have been showing Saturday 3pm Premier League games using satellite set top boxes with a mainland Europe broadcaster's subscription card in.

They will all be on terrestrial television so no need to go to the pub anyway.

None of the big games are being show at 11pm (other than England Vs Italy), due to the impact on advertising in Europe.

Which of these do you think will be worth a pub getting a late licence for:
13 June: Chile v Australia (23:00, ITV)
15 June: Ivory Coast v Japan (02:00, ITV), Argentina v Bosnia-Hercegovina (23:00, BBC)
16 June: Ghana v USA (23:00, BBC)
17 June: Russia v South Korea (23:00, BBC)
18 June: Cameroon v Croatia (23:00, ITV),
19 June: Japan v Greece (23:00, BBC)
20 June: Honduras v Ecuador (23:00, ITV)
21 June: Nigeria v Bosnia-Hercegovina (23:00, BBC)
22 June: USA v Portugal (23:00, BBC)

All other games have 5pm or 8pm kick-off

Are pubs really this dependent on 3pm tv?
