BHAFC University study!

Hi all,

I am currently in my final year at Sussex Uni across the road from the Amex, and I am studying BHAFC fans, their identity as Albion fans, and the impact that geography (ie, where fans live/work/travel/socialise) has on 'fandom'. That might sound a bit confusing, but the point of the work is to investigate whether football 'fandom' is changing from more traditional ideas to modern, flexible ideas of what being a 'fan' is. I'm sure there is a wealth of differing opinions from all ages, gender, ethnic backgrounds etc and I will be only too happy to read or use them if any of you feel the urge to reply on here! Alternatively, if you feel you are really interested in the topic and/or would be able to contribute to the research in ANY way then feel free to get in touch with me on here and we can go from there.

All going to plan, the intention is to raise wider awareness (at the club/ The FA) about changing and different types/groups of fans and how bloody important it is to accomadate to fans and their needs individually when it is required.

SO, the point of this post then is to:

A) advertise again, to all fans, this survey (which some of you might have seen/done previously on NSC, with thanks to a fellow BHAFC fan on here):

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1tPhA9ZB6nNWda5kAg5rBKdzPG7k_13lxXpcwaUcbsB4/viewform?embedded=true

Only takes a few minutes!

and

B) appeal to younger fans in an age-group similar to mine (18-25) to complete the above survey but also to gauge interest in taking part in short, informal interviews for my work? I'll be honest, there's not much in it for you except a pint and the knowledge you've helped out a fellow fan! I am interested in finding out about fans who live in Brighton and Hove, or surrounding areas.

Cheers!

Happy to help but your link doesn't seem to work. I'm a bit of a geographist if that's any help.

Edit: The link does now work and I see this is the survey I did previously. Send me a PM if I can help in any other way.

Noted! and fixed, I hope!

Thats great mate, looking to hopefully spark a discussion on here if possible!

How many people support BHAFC, purely because of geographical proximity to Brighton? Or because parents supported them?

Any other reasons?

Started to do it but the wording irritated me because BHA is the default club for most of Sussex (especially those of us born near the coast) not just those born in Brighton and Hove. Worthing, Shoreham, Lewes, Eastbourne, Burgess Hill, H Heath etc etc are not Brighton suburbs. It may seem like I'm nitpicking but I'm extremely proud that Worthing where I was born is an Albion stronghold.

In some ways we're a lot different from most football clubs given the transient population of Brighton and Hove, the real hotbeds of Albion support are the towns around it rather than the city centre itself. Can you not change the wording to reflect this?

Thanks for your comments Buzzer, very interesting. What I will say is that unquestionably, the fact that BHAFC exists in an area relatively lacking in pro football clubs has been acknowledged in my work - its hasnt been ignored! I am not disregarding the outer reaches of The Albion's 'catchment' area at all, and I will alter (I think you are referring to Q8?) accordingly.

It is for this reason that I am actually using BHAFC as a case study - are local communities still the hotbed for football club support? There are many arguments that say this isn't so anymore. So, I am lucky that The Albion is on my doorstep but also an ideal example to study and challenge modern ideas of what a fan is.

Do you feel any affiliation with Worthing FC?

Given you description of Brighton as a transient population, do you feel you and the club benefits from its new, slightly, 'out-of-town' location at Falmer? For travel reasons or other?

The most curious thing..
BHA affinity because it was the local/nearest club to where I was brought up (not born) - which is not in Brighton or Hove. It was the only league club in Sussex.

I have no affinity for any club where I currently live, although I have a nostalgic regard for Hull City from when I lived there a long time ago now.

Can't believe he didn't have a Totton category either. I believe there are 2 of us!

Brought up in Crowborough as a youngster. Everything was about Sussex. Cricket, Football, culture, beer.

Sussex is where I am from and Brighton are the football club of Sussex.

Never been more complicated than that for me which was down to my Dad. He is an Arundel man. Sussex was always where would say he is from when asked. Not East, WEst - just Sussex.
