Brennan Dickenson’s looping cross-shot sent Albion’s under-21s into the fourth round of the Sussex Senior Cup after victory over 10-man Borough.
Ireland’s side had an opportunity on goal within the first minute, as debutant Jeffrey Monokana’s free-kick sailed narrowly over the bar after Jimmy Muitt was fouled on the edge of the area.Borough also had a chance to take the lead early on, as Tom Derry headed wide at the near post after a whipped in cross from the left-hand side.
Monokana continued to look lively in the opening stages, shooting narrowly wide from a central position after linking well with Dickenson.
Muitt then had a chance to break the deadlock after cutting inside and sending a swirling effort into the hands of keeper Craig Ross.
The Seagulls scored the decisive goal on the half-hour mark, when Dickenson raced down the left-hand side and saw his effort beat Ross at the far post.
Ireland’s side then had a chance to double their advantage, as Dickenson back-heeled a pass into the path of Rob Hunt, but Ross produced a low save to deny the full-back.
Borough were then dealt a killer below just moments later after Chris Shepherd was shown a straight red card for foul and abusive language towards the referee.
The forward appeared to react angrily towards the referee after Simon Johnson was penalised for a challenge on Monokana and was subsequently given his marching orders.
Despite going down to ten men, Eastbourne continued to carry a threat going forward after Adam Watts narrowly failed to make a connection with Frankie Raymond’s ball into the box.
Borough continued to get closer to an equaliser as substitute Emmanuel Akokhia got the better of Tom Dallison inside the box, but the defender recovered well to clear the danger.
Albion’s first real chance after the break came from Courtney Richards after linking up well with the Dickenson, but he was denied by Sam Cole’s goal-line clearance.
Substitute Jason Davis then proved to be a real threat for Albion and he almost doubled the lead after racing one-on-one with Ross, but shot wide.
Eastbourne maintained a real threat for the remaining half-hour in search of an elusive equaliser, as Watts’s dangerous ball into the box forced Glen Rea and Dallison to play a game of head tennis inside the six-yard box before the ball was eventually cleared.
Elliot Levy then almost netted a hard-earned leveller for the away side, after latching onto an in-swinging free-kick, but his effort hit the side-netting and Ireland’s team earned a safe passage into the fourth round.
Albion: Walton (GK); Deen, Rea, Dallison, Hunt; Monokana, Harris (Asmundsson 56) , Richards, Starkey; Muitt (Davis 64), Dickenson. Subs not used: Smith (GK), Benham, Lall.
