Have to say not convinced on the Hs2 case at all would rather see network upgrades across the UK it takes longer to travel from Stoke-on-Trent to Derby than from Victoria to Brighton take a look at the rolling stock ! Maybe the case for The Wealden line should seriously be looked into ? DJC_156415_Newark-C_280608.jpg

They spent billions already upgrading the West Coast so it would be a pointless exercise chucking even more money into a black hole.

HS2 is not being funded from a pot marked "the railways". Its a political infrastucture project, if it doesn't go ahead the money will go into some other major infrastructure project or wont be spent at all (booking a nice saving in the budget). It wont find its way rest of the rail network.

Listening to the radio last week they claimed Since 2008 when HS2 was proposed, China has built 6000 miles of high speed line. We are still debating the 100ish miles.

The money should be spent on other major RAILWAY infrastructure projects including BML2. HS2 is a vanity project that is totally unnecessary. If they need more rail capacity from up north to London, then rebuild the Grand Central Railway including reopening the Woodhead Tunnel.

Precisely.

With regard to China it would be interesting to work out how much high speed line in proportion to relative size of the UK we should have built. I wonder how their planning laws work in this respect and how much care and attention they pay to the concerns of those affected by the new lines?

I have to say, I don't think this is just a rail problem. Driving from West-East (or East-West) in the Midlands usually takes far longer than it should. It seems that we are only really geared for travel from North-South and South-North in the country.
