Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has revealed how he convinced Lewis Grabban to turn down a move to Albion.
Howe insisted Bournemouth’s wage structure had not been broken by the striker’s new three-and-a-half year deal, which was announced today.
Grabban had looked set to move to The Amex after passing a medical during the week.
Howe told BBC Radio Solent tonight: “It was a bit of a difficult week. We had no control over what was happening.
*“We knew a bid was coming in. We were powerless to stop it.
“Lewis went to speak to Brighton, we tried to convince him to stay.
“We asked him to give us an opportunity to put something to him.
“He gave us that opportunity and we managed to persuade him to stay.”
Howe suggested Grabban remained the lowest paid among the leading goalscorers in the Championship.
He added: “We are not big wage-payers. We can’t be with the revenue we earn and Financial Fair Play will hit us hard.”
Howe added: “He has been a model pro throughout. He handled himself very well during the week.
“At no stage did I ever feel his commitment to this club wavered.”
