So how well is your team coping with the changes? Didn’t know about them? Well …

The NHL realignment means a new look and a different schedule as of 2013-14.

You'll also be looking at the NHL standings in a whole new way.

Plus there's a new twist in the playoff race, and changes in how teams are ranked for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Under the changes agreed to by the NHL and NHL Players' Association, the Eastern and Western Conferences remain.
But each conference will now contain two divisions instead of three.

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division
Metropolitan Division

Western Conference

Central Division
Pacific Division

Here's how it looks at around the half way stage:

Atlantic GP W L OT P

The "Wild Card" Playoff Race

The top three teams in each division are the first 12 teams to qualify for the playoffs. (Six in each conference.)
The remaining spots go to "wild card" teams: the two highest finishers in each Conference, regardless of division.

That makes eight playoff qualifiers in each Conference, with the possibility of up to five playoff teams from one division.

The Playoff Format

Wild card teams are seeded seventh and eighth in each Conference.

Division winners are seeded first and second in each Conference, and meet the wild card teams in the opening round of the playoffs. (1-versus-8 and 2-versus-7.)

Teams finishing second and third in each Division play the first round of the playoffs within the Division.

The winners of each series play for berths in the Conference Championship series.

The two divisional champions in each conference play the Conference Finals to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

Did anyone see the Winter Classic yesterday, pretty good stuff. 105,000 fans watching Ice Hockey outdoors while it was snowing!!!

Toronto won (2-1) in the shootout to take the game 3-2.

The winter classic was excellent. First period was a bit of a 'testing' period, but Bernier performed heroics in the Leafs net to keep us in it. Was so happy to win the shootout, a bit of revenge for the game a couple of weeks ago in which Detroit beat us in the shootout after a 4-4 draw.

The atlantic division is especially tough now that Detroit have been brought in, but I do feel that both wild card picks for the playoffs from the Eastern will come from the Atlantic over the Metropolitan, there is such a gulf in class between the two divisions. It's been a mixed first half for Toronto, started so well in the first 10/12 games then it all kind of fell apart with injuries and suspensions. Picked it up again recently though, scoring points in the last 6.

Tamba Bay are definitely my surprise team of the year so far, absolutely no idea where they've come from. Fully expect to see the Blackhawks and the Pengs up there probably with the Bruins in battling for the Stanley Cup this season, again.

My Tampa team are finally living up to their talent. The league broke up our winning team once by implimenting the cap when we were finally on top and champions, destroyed the whole club for what 10 years.

And don't get me started on injuries........... just hope we can hold it together
