Stephen Ward headed a late equaliser for Albion.
But they were still left to count the cost of two dropped points after a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.
Ward struck from close range on 90 minutes after a hectic goalmouth scramble.
His effort cancelled out a highly controversial first-half penalty drilled home by Lewis Grabban for what looked a clean tackle by Inigo Calderon on Marc Pugh.
Referee Simon Hooper was booed off at half-time but, even, with that poor decision, Albion should have been in front at the break.
Andrew Crofts shot against the post even before the Cherries had gone ahead.
Lee Camp was at fault with that one as he let the ball skid under his body.
But the on-loan keeper came to his side’s rescue with a stunning save from Kazenga LuaLua before the break.
He also did well to block two Leo Ulloa efforts although the striker probably should have scored on each occasion.
Albion struggled for attacking fluency after the break but still went close with a LuaLua shot which crashed back off the underside of the bar.
Camp made another good save to deny Barnes, who also headed on to the top of the bar.
Then, in added time, the on-loan keeper blocked from Kemy Agustien and held Liam Bridcutt’s shot as the hosts chased a very late winner.
