If our world leaders had decided to spend absolutely nothing on the nauseating pyrotechnic displays in Dubai, Beijing, Sydney, Tokyo, London, etc, etc, that we were force fed on the box last night, what could have been achieved in the name of humanity. How many African villages could have been supplied with clean running water? Never have I been so ashamed to be a citizen of planet earth.

A happy new year to you all !

Happy new year Binney, but surely the fireworks are just a drop in the ocean compared to greed and waste exhibited around the world during the rest of the year.

Indeed. But there is probably a case of "look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves". I don't have the visceral reaction to fireworks that Binney has, but absolutely agree with the general sentiment that public money is often spent on things that are hard to justify in the grand scheme of things.

There was a colossal f**k up in Dubai as they closed off the Palm for the fireworks not giving two hoots about all the hotels and access to Sandance music festival at the Atlantis Hotel located at the end of the Palm.

So next time you're stuck on the Albion Park and Ride for a little while longer than expected think about these poor revellers...

I agree entirely with the sentiment also

Yes they are - this year Vodaphone put up a chunk of the money. Considering how spectacular they were i thought they were pretty good value too. I read somewhere else the cost for the show was around £2m. If you factor in the business that sightseers and revellers spend on the day/night it's good for the capital.

From where I was standing 5 mins away from the Palm J in Dubai, it was the most impressive firework display that I've ever seen.

30 miles of fireworks going off simultaneously along the coastline was truly a sight to behold. Magical, in fact.

Happy New Year to you!

Yeah, nice sentiments if a bit Sixth Form Common room. Leaving aside the jobs in the firework industry that depend on these spectaculars a lot of the displays are sponsored and thus paid for by industry - wouldn't it be great if instead of wasting money on sponsorship (including sports sponsorship) they cut their prices to help the less well off? And if Tony Bloom really cared about the people of Brighton and Hove he'd have built a hospital or school instead of a stupid football ground. The world's a bit more complex than you make out.

Does Cameron have any say in what Londoners do with their council tax?

How much has the OP donated to Oxfam/Tearfund/Save the Children/Medecin sans Frontiers this past 12 months?

i suppose it would ad another fraction of a % to the dozens of billions of foreign aid given out. or maybe one could think that money alone doesn't solve everything (i wont pretend to know what is the solution, but spending aid money clearly hasnt fixed much)

Sadly, this. It's like the daft argument about pooling all the money in the UK and then dividing it out equally to every adult. Yes, great, we all become millionaires but who the hell is going to produce goods and supply services when everyone is at home not working because their "loaded" ?

Imagine if everyone refused that last drink last night, but put the money in a giant money box. Just imagine that. The money box would be too heavy to transport to Africa so they would miss out anyway.

Are the london fireworks for example not largelyfinanced by private business sponsorship.?

Not sure but i think the OPs point was if the money spent could be put to a better use, not so much where it came from.

It is privately funded ,brings people into City to spend money ,keeps people in jobs, etc etc .For goodness sake why not have us all mirror Kim Jong in north korea ,after all he sends vast amounts of money for aid and keeps his people in opulence doesnt he ,and he would certainly not indulge in any fireworks .

I love the idea our two choices are on the one hand the ridiculous imbalance we have now and on the other socialism.

If you think that too few have too much and too many have too little then you must be a communist

Perhaps we could find a more happy medium somewhere in the middle?

This says a lot about this subject.
