The JAZZ thread

Thanks Greens :(
Didn't see a thread on jazz, so thought I'd pop one up

I was getting a bit fed up of beat combos assailing my lugholes with percussive nonsense, so when I spied an Andy Hamilton record at a bootie, I snaffled it up, and am now grooving to the mellow vibes therein

Nice

Any afficianados sur la board ???

Jazz-wise, here's who I like (and yes, there's some blues/rock crossover):
Guitarists: Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Al di Meola
Keyboard/piano: Jimmy Smith, Oscar Peterson
Singers: King Pleasure (scat), Ella Fitzgerald, Big Joe Turner, Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan
Wind instruments: Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane
Bands: If, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Count Basie Orchestra

Any other recommendations? I like a wide range from trad jazz to big bands, bebop to fusion

I went to The Ancient Mariner a few Thursdays ago, which had some live jazz that was nice. Bit of a culture shock, as hadn't been in there for thirty years when it was The Rutland

Wouldn't call myself an aficionado but own quite a lot of jazz. Current favourite is Chet Baker in Paris 1955-56 but this is a decent starting place if you like some vocals too:

Oooh, I could be here a while.

I'll kick off with this years MOBO best Jazz Act winner - Sons of Kemet. This is off their album - Burn.

Very dub influenced this one, but 'nu jazz' nonetheless I'd say.

The last Jazz thread that I can remember on here also had the classic fast show nods on the very first page as well

Very partial to a bit of Mr Bechet too...in fact I'm now about to sick on The Bluebird Sessions 1932-1943. Class.

Miles Davies!

Miles Davis, I presume! Kind of Blue is a classic.

I'm surprised Courtney Pine has not been mentioned before.

Bireli Lagrene is a favourite, Blue eyes is a great introduction in that they are all songs associated with Sinatra.

OK, I'll be the philistine. I can't stand jazz, because they're clearly making it up as they go along.

There, I said it.
