Mollie Kmita’s debut goal could not prevent Albion women facing defeat, despite a spirited second-half performance against Portsmouth.Kmita was one of three debutants on the day, along with twin sister Rosie and new keeper Toni-Anne Wayne.
The Seagulls took the lead after just six minutes, as Mollie Kmita met Tammy Waine’s cross inside the area and slotted the ball past Sadie Blakely at the far post.
But Pompey equalised in the 13th minute, when Leeta Rutherford’s long-distance strike looped over Wayne.
John Donoghue’s side ventured forward to try and re-establish their lead, as Rosie Kmita met Lily Agg’s cross before the ball fell to Sophie Perry, who saw her effort deflected behind for a corner.
Portsmouth continued to look threatening on the counter-attack and scored what proved to be the decisive second goal through Lucy Quinn.
Quinn met Jess Frampton’s cross with a diving header at the far post to make it 2-1.
The forward could have had a second goal moments later after meeting Charley Wilson’s cross, but Albion cleared the danger.

Donoghue’s team ventured forward to level the score-line with Perry and Rosie Kmita linking up well to set up Agg on the edge of the box, but her shot went wide of the target.
Kirsty Barton then had a chance right on half-time after meeting Perry’s corner, but Blakely saved the midfielder’s shot with a good save at the near post.
Albion continued to search for the equaliser after the break when Rebecca Thompson-Agbro narrowly failed to connect with Barton’s corner, before Kate Natkiel saw her effort blocked inside the box.
The final ten minutes saw a period of relentless pressure from the hosts as Portsmouth clung onto their slender lead.
Substitute Kim Stenning attempted to find Waine inside the box, but her pass agonisingly rolled behind the Albion captain. Thompson-Agbro then met another Barton corner only for Blakely to tip her header onto the post.
Perry also came close from a Barton set-piece, but she saw her header rise over the crossbar.
Natkiel also came close once again when her shot was tipped against the woodwork before Blakely was forced into a fine save to prevent Lauren Murphy from scoring an own-goal.
Head Coach Donoghue was pleased with his side’s second-half performance, but was left to reflect on a narrow defeat.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “The second-half was absolutely wonderful and I couldn’t have asked for more from them. We’ve come across a goalkeeper who has had a terrific display.
“There were several saves from the keeper, credit to Pompey they put some bodies behind the ball and prevented us scoring. But when you’ve had so many opportunities and had the ball for the majority of the* second-half, you’d think we could stick one away.”
Albion: Wayne (GK); Poole, Thompson-Agbro, Hector; M. Kmita (Owen 54), Natkiel, Perry, Barton, R. Kmita (Stenning 54); Agg, Waine. Subs not used: Carter, Beaumont, Boswell.
