I cannot say how big it is to come up here and win and it keeps our momentum going"
Nathan Jones
Nathan Jones was impressed with Albion’s grit and determination as they edged out Middlesbrough, thanks to Matthew Upson's late goal.
The assistant head coach told seagulls.co.uk, “Sometimes a 1-0 is better than a 3-0 or 4-0 because it galvanises you and you really have to grind the result out, and that is what we have done today, it was a real honest win.
“The three points are big, especially in this league with the close proximity of all the teams, but to come away to Middlesbrough – who are in a false position; they are better than the position than they are in – and get the win is massive.*
“We started very, very well in the first 20 minutes and we could have been one or two up but then we had to grind it out. We were not fluent in anything we did, we had to shore it up but we made positive subs to try and win the game.
“I cannot say how big it is to come up here and win and it keeps our momentum going.”
Jones reiterated that Oscar Garcia made attacking substitutions by bringing on Kazenga LuaLua and Leo Ulloa, although he confessed the bench was slightly defence-minded.
“We always like to make positive substitutions but to be fair we made our first negative decision today as we left Will Buckley out because we put an extra defender on the bench.*
“We knew Stephen Ward was struggling so we had to be sensible but we made calculated decisions with bringing on Kazenga LuaLua and Leo Ulloa; they are not 100 per cent fit but with them on the bench you have good options." *
Meanwhile Jones paid tribute to outgoing midfielder Craig Conway, who will return to his parent club Cardiff City following the conclusion of his loan deal. *
“We knew what Craig was going to give us and he has got better as his loan has gone on. He has done nothing better or worse than we expected because we did our homework on him and he is a fantastic guy to have around.*
“His loan spell has been very productive and we have been really pleased with him. He has been a credit to himself by the way he handles himself and he has got himself back into the Scotland fold as well. He has been excellent.”
