If so, what's the going rate? Is it worth it to keep him / her onside?

And what's reasonable to give carol singers? Is it more for a group? Anybody seen any?

I've lost touch with these things...

We get so many different postpersons one week to the next, it would be a bit unfair to tip the one who happens to deliver our mail around Christmas time. And, I understand that post workers' salaries have risen by more than 9% since the privatisation took place. So, we don't technically tend to tip.

To the dustmen who empty our bins 3 times a week [inc Christmas Day] & they take everything....20 euros. Postie...5 euros & feliz navidad!

Having once been a postie for 20 yrs i found tipping patterns vary greatly from area to area i delivered to , very patchy in what are deemed to be posh areas with a small percentage tipping compared to places like scoomb where i was tipped less value but in much higher numbers , my best haul was £370 , my single best tip ever was £50 but i did find the guys wallet in the street earlier in the year . So yes my regular postie will be getting a £10 .

Carol singers , no , lights out fingers in ears

I'm not sure I've ever met my postie. Comes around 1:30pm monday-friday only. Know his handwriting from parcel collection cards though.

Binmen are gone by 8am, never seen them either.

I'm pretty sure we don't have a regular postman, on the occasions I do see one in the street, it's always a different one. Never tipped a postman.

I'd be keener on tipping my "postie" if I hadn't just been the victim of a theft by one of his colleagues at the Royal Mail...

Tip a postman? Why exactly? They are paid to put my letters through my letterbox, which they do. Why would a postman deserve a tip for that? I tip people that do something extra, like a cabbie that helps me carry shopping bags to my door for example.

I tip nobody. Why should some workers get tips while others don't? Do you tip a bus driver or a chemist?

Window cleaner gets a tip, postie gets one too, as does the hairdresser. Dustman? Lucky to get off my drive without a verbal assault being launched at them!

Because I see my postie regularly, and want him "on-side", as I said. When I was working, I had stuff delivered to the office post-room, and always bought them a big box of chocolates for Xmas.

Everybody else just gets a "thank-you", except for carol singers (and trick-or-treaters) who usually get ignored.

Not really one to go tipping people for just doing the job they are paid to do but for the first time ever I was contemplating tipping my postman this Christmas. He always arrived pretty much bang on 9.30am, was always cheerful and happy to stop for a chat (my god I sound like a pensioner!!) and has been known to try to redeliver a package that was too big for the letterbox on his way back round on the off chance that someone who was out earlier when he first came past was now back home. He genuinely seemed to enjoy his job and in a very clichéd sort of way his cheerful demeanour rubbed off on others........then the local sorting office changed the routes a few weeks ago, so not seen him since and there is now more chance of Ashley Barnes being universally praised on NSC than seeing the same postman twice or having a delivery at the same time two days running.

Haven't tipped a postie in years. Dunno when they turn up now. I've had 3 lots of vouchers and money nicked from the PO before Back when I was enough of an idiot to send valuables in the post.

I give carol singers money if they're not grubby little tinkers.
