George Green’s brace for Premier League Everton ended Albion’s FA Youth Cup hopes for another season.
Simon Rusk’s under-18 side knew they were the underdogs heading into the tie at Goodison Park but despite a determined performance, the quality of opposition, especially Green, shone through.*
The first big chance of the evening actually fell to Albion’s 15-year-old Jordan Maguire-Drew, who just failed to connect with Jason Davis’s cross.
Everton were dominating early possession though and they threatened for the first time 15 minutes in when captain Gethin Jones fired over from an acute angle.
The Seagulls were looking incisive on the attack and a clever corner routine found Charlie Harris on the edge of the box; his quick feet alluded the attention of the Toffees defence but the midfielder’s stinging drive was beaten away by Russell Griffiths.
Up the other end an exquisite passing move ended with Ryan Ledson blasting into the side netting while Jones also stabbed wide for the hosts.
Goalkeeper Christian Walton – fresh from being named on the Albion first-team bench on Saturday – did brilliantly to push away Jonjoe Kenny’s close-range effort after the ball had fallen loose in the box, but neither side could find a way through as the first half ended goalless.
It was the Toffees who came out the stronger after the break and almost grabbed the lead in fortunate circumstances; Walton however was once again on hand to claw the ball away following a wicked deflection off the head of Tom Dallison.*
Everton should have taken the lead as Ledson spurned a glorious chance; arriving unmarked at the back post he headed into the side netting from close range.
But the Merseyside outfit finally broke the Seagulls’ brave resistance on the hour mark as Green cut inside and found the bottom corner to spark the celebrations.*
Everton had the ball in the back of the net again via Green just moments later, but the midfielder’s effort was ruled out for a foul on Walton.*
Green was proving the thorn in Albion's side and he drew another decent stop out of Walton before doubling the lead with 15 minutes remaining from the penalty spot.
Everton were awarded the spot kick for a dubious looking handball and the in-form striker stepped up to secure his side's passage into the fourth round.*
There was still time for Walton to show his qualities as he twice denied Green before an excellent one-on-one stop thwarted Jones.
Albion: Walton; Deen, Barnett, Horncastle (Benham 46), Dallinson (Mar-Larusson 78), Starkey, Davis, Harris, Muitt (Collar, 72) Tighe, Maguire-Drew*
Subs not used: Wray (GK), Hutchinson
