Martin 85 (OG)Albion women were eliminated from the Premier League Cup at the group stages, despite a late Kirsty Barton strike and an own goal from the hosts.
The Seagulls started brightly and created a number of early opportunities; Kim Stenning narrowly failed to make contact with Tammy Waine’s deep cross into the area, before Charlotte Owen fired wide from Lily Agg’s initial free-kick.
Waine and Renee Hector then rose high inside the box following Barton’s free-kick, but neither could make a good connection from the set-piece.
But it was Tottenham who took the lead thanks to Wendy Martin. Rebecca Thompson-Agbro was penalised for a challenge on the edge of the area and Martin’s quickly taken set-piece beat Charlotte Sole to give Spurs an unlikely advantage.
Albion continued to create chances after conceding, as Stenning latched onto Agg’s through ball only to fire wide of the target, before Waine shot straight into Morgan’s hands after Charley Boswell’s cross.
Agg had the first opportunity after the break when her speculative effort rose over the crossbar, but it was the home side that struck again.
Megan Wynne broke away on the counter-attack and doubled the north Londoners’ advantage after lobbing Sole just before the hour mark.
Tottenham’s safe passage to the quarter-finals was secured with two goals in two minutes, after Kimberley Lane’s floating ball drifted into the net before Martin quickly reacted to Bianca Baptiste’s rebounded shot and slotted home to make it 4-0.
John Donoghue’s side rallied late on to bring some respectability to the scoreline, as Chloe Morgan tipped Waine’s original shot into the path of Barton to slot home. Substitute Kim Whitcombe’s free-kick then created havoc inside the box and Spurs goalscorer Martin slid the ball into her own net to make it 4-2.
Head coach Donoghue was magnanimous in defeat and admitted Spurs deserved their victory.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “Tottenham had more desire and more energy. They were disciplined, thought quicker and reacted better than us.
“Saying that although we weren’t on it in the first-half, we had possession in good areas and almost scored, but then we concede a goal from a set-piece and we’re chasing the game. Tottenham deserved the win."
