Albion women were beaten by Gillingham for a second time this season, after losing 3-0 to the league leaders at Chatham.Amy Taylor gave Gills the lead, before strikes from former Seagull Charlotte Gurr and Lisa Fulgence secured the victory.
John Donoghue’s side had a couple of opportunities early on in the game, when Charlotte Owen forced a good save from Faye Baker. Kirsty Barton then had an effort off-target after some good work down the right-hand side by Kate Natkiel.
But the Kent side took the lead in emphatic style, thanks to Taylor’s superb effort that curled past an outstretched Charlotte Sole with just under a quarter of an hour played.
The Gills then continued to press forward, as Gurr delivered a dangerous ball into the box only for Deanne Cooper to shoot over the bar from close range.
A second goal came courtesy of Gurr, after she finished off a slick counter-attacking move involving Jade Keogh and Danielle Carlton with a cool finish past Sole.
Sole then made a superb save to stop the Kent side extending their lead, tipping Carlton’s header over the bar.
The second-half started in much the same vain as Sole was forced into another fine stop to deny Carlton again, but the Seagulls then had a couple of chances to bring themselves back into the game.
Kim Stenning made an immediate impact off the bench when her header forced Baker into a fine save, before the striker slid another effort wide from Tammy Waine’s cross.
But the home side were a constant threat going forward, with Sole having to be alert to stop Keogh from a scoring a third goal. Gurr then whipped in a dangerous ball into the path of Fulgence, but the striker shot over the bar from inside the box.
Renee Hector then had a chance to get Albion off the mark, after meeting Barton’s set-piece, but Baker claimed the ball at the last moment.
Nikita Whinnett nearly scored a third Gillingham goal when she struck the post from close range, but it was Fulgence that eventually added extra gloss to the scoreline.
Sole initially denied Emma Tune from inside the box, but the rebound fell kindly for the striker who tapped the ball home to complete a comfortable victory.
Despite the result, head coach Donoghue believes there were still reasons to be positive after the game.
He told seagulls.co.uk, “I think we’ve come across a really strong team, you can see why they’re unbeaten and why they score goals.
“You accept that you are going to play against teams that are better than you and accept that they’re a bit further along in their development, but what you want to do is get something from the game.
“We had three players at the back in the second-half and tried to be a bit braver; it kept us in the game for longer and we created opportunities with crosses from wide areas. So I was really pleased with that side of things.”
