Albion’s under-21s began their defence of the Sussex Senior Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over Arundel, courtesy of a Solly March brace and another from Brennan Dickenson.
The win, which sees Simon Ireland’s men progress into the third round, could have been even more comprehensive had it not been for a host of smart saves from Arundel keeper James Fernandes.
The game started evenly, and after a lively opening ten minutes which saw Grant Smith forced into two smart saves, Albion’s youngsters soon settled and took the lead half an hour into proceedings.
Awarded a free-kick 30 yards from the Arundel goal, March – who had gone close earlier with a darting run and cross – stepped up and confidently fired Albion into a deserved lead.
Prior to the goal the home side had been forced to shoot from distance and the practice clearly paid off as March curled his effort into the top corner.
Ten minutes later it was 2-0 as Dickenson doubled the lead with a well-taken finish after finding himself in space on the edge of the area.
Shortly after the interval, Albion were unlucky not to increase their cushion when Glen Rea rose highest only to see his header hit the underside of the bar before he and Dickenson both saw efforts fly over.
James Muitt was next to go close as his effort rolled wide of the post after he’d cut in from the wing. March then latched on to a smart through ball before finding his path blocked.*
March finally added Albion’s third with fifteen minutes left, curling in an exquisite left-footed effort from the edge of the area.
With time running out the Seagulls continued to press for a fourth but it never came as Arundel held firm, despite a ferocious drive from Dickenson that drew a superb stop from Fernandes.
Albion: Smith; Rea, Chicksen (Barnett, 73), Asmundsson, Dallison (Muitt 62), Maksimenko (capt), Hunt, Harris (Wiltshire, 77), Deen; March, Dickenson.
