Brighton and Hove Albion manager Oscar Garcia has been sacked - for throwing a squirrel at a player.
A brief statement issued on the Clubs official website read: "It is with sincere regret that the Club must today announce the termination of Oscar Garcia's contract. This follows an unsavoury and unprofessional incident during training yesterday, involving a small to medium sized wild rodent coming into direct contact with the face of a member of the playing squad. First team coach Nathan Jones will take interim charge of the team for Saturdays trip to Wigan while the Club begins the search for a permanent manager. We would like to place on record our thanks to Oscar for all his work so far this season, and wish him well for the future".
When told of the incident, Chairman Tony Bloom was said to be "furious", and immediately summonsed the former Barcelona midfielder to a meeting at the Amex, where he was promptly given his marching orders. Garcia, 40, was appointed Albion manager in July, following the acrimonious departure of former manager Gus Poyet, now at Sunderland. The feral rodent (the squirrel, not Gus Poyet) was reported to have been scampering across the training ground as the team trained on Monday. In a bizarre turnabout of events, the popular woodland nut-smuggler became entangled in Gordon Greer's discarded jockstrap, whereupon it panicked went into shock. Oscar Garcia is alleged to have grabbed the traumatised creature, turned, and hurled it from close range into the face of the unnamed player, who as a result suffered scratches to his lip and eye, and was tended to by club medics at the scene.
The player is now recovering at home but is expected to be fit and available for selection by the weekend. The whereabouts of the squirrel is still unknown.
