Anyone else going ?

First saw Steve back in mid-70's when he was a very big star, but he disappeared quickly....then caught up with him in the last 80's/early 90's and saw some great shows. He'd certainly mellowed a bit after 10+ years in obscurity.

Always felt that he's been a bit overlooked. Maybe he made too many enemies in the media as a very abrasive, insecure young guy ?

What does NSC think about Mr. Harley ?

I liked Cockney Rebel and in "Come up and see me" he has one timeless pop song to his name.

I seem to recall the drummer (?) of Cockney Rebel died in the Lockerbie Pan Am disaster?

Not sure I can be arsed to go though.

My favourite, still sounds good to me

Saw him a couple of times in Worthing in the late 80's/early 90's and he put on a good show.

Reading Rock Festival 1978 I think....I was walking round the campsite area during his performance but it sounded good...

he's still very good, has mellowed and puts everything into the old Cockney Rebel classics - Mr Soft, Make Me Smile, Here Comes the Sun, Judy Teen, Mr Raffles, Sebastian, Tumbling Down, Best Years of our Lives and Love's a Prima Donna.

Well worth going if you can. SH usually mentions losing his bass guitarist (25 years ago ...blimey!!) in Pan Am's flight 103 over Lockerbie, his family links with Brighton and how he suffered from polio in his teens leaving him with a limp.

Yes, just like Ian Dury, he had polio as a child. I've often thought there are many other similarities between Harley and Dury : the exaggerated London/Cockney inflections, the clever wordplay, the volatility and aggression that so often surfaced, and the ability to come up with some uniquely quirky pop classics. Interesting artists.

Same here - always entertaining even if he had a habit of forgetting the words to his own songs.

Speaking of Ian Dury, The Blockheads are playing St Pauls church / community centre in Worthing at the end of this month. Smallish venue but superb acoustics.

I have it on good authority that a certain Mr Rick Buckler will also be there, as manager of the support act.

I will HUNT Rick out and tell him that I love him and I will certainly give him a kisseroonee and sing 'When you're young' whilst doing so.

 Was that the one with Pattie Smith, The Motors, and Sham 69? I went three times, and they all seemed to have merged into one memory now, i cant think why

Yep, I was there, with my 23 year old son who only knew a few of the better-known tracks. These days, Harley chats a lot with the audience and likes to joke around a bit in a friendly kind of way. Light years away from the angst-ridden young guy who rose to fame 40 years ago.

Played for almost 3 hours, from the glam rock pomp of Sebastian to the quirky Mr. Soft, from the reflective Coast of Amalfi to the knockabout fun of Come Up And See Me.

Thoroughly enjoyable evening from a great, if overlooked, talent.
