Connections with Brighton and Hove : Roy Chuter was one of the greatest fans Brighton and Hove Albion has ever had, He campaigned against many of the decisions in the Nineties that nearly put the club out of business and gained a lot of support. Chuter was keen that Dick Knight should take over the club from the previous owners and succeeded in that aim. When Albion moved to Withdean Stadium, Chuter edited the match day programmes for many years. He campaigned hard for the new Amex Community Stadium and was delighted when it was finally completed. He suggested features such as the supporters'; bar and memorial garden Chuter gained a first in English at Manchester University before moving to Sussex. At one time he was landlord of the Duke of Wellington pub in Shoreham Sadly he died after being hit by a train at East Worthing station in 2013. He had left notes about his intention. The club paid tribute to him and a minute's silence was held before the home match against Newport.

Great stuff.

As an aside, a few of us went to the wellie after the game on Saturday and they have a lasting tribute there now.

Underneath one of the beams are loads of (an educated guess here) Roy's tankards with the wording above stretching the length of it:

'If you've heard of it, we don't sell it'

If I've got that quote wrong I'm sure someone in tight jeans and doc martins will correct it and tell us the tale behind it.

Excellent, the family will be pleased.

The tankards have an intersting history as Roy inherited them for the pub from another old Albion stalwart, Keith Gumbrell. Keith collected them whilst living in Holland and Belgium in the 80's and spending most weekends, whilst not watching the Albion, doing a four match bash across Germany, Holland and Belguim.

Great news indeed, and you're right about the quote, Sid.
Although it could equally be attributed to Brodie, current Welly landlord when he sadly passed away suddenly a few weeks ago.

I like the Welly. It's full of good ale and most of the clientele are a little eccentric or just plain oddball. I feel comfy in there.
Still a bit sad in there at the moment obviously.

I haven't been in the Welly since the Guv'nor passed away. I loved it when Roy was there and he held court or played his music of choice (much of which coincides with my own, especially Springsteen) The clientele are wonderfully 'dotty'....I love 'em.

That's fantasic news, something a few of us have been campaigning for!

Just one mistake:

Dover said:
Chuter gained a first in English at Manchester University before moving to Sussex.

Roy returned to Brighton, he was born & bred in Sussex, his mother was an Albion season ticket holder
for many years - Goldstone & Withdean, sadly she never got to see Falmer.

I hadn't seen this thread till now but want to say what a lovely idea this was by Roy's close friends. Never thought it was going to actually happen - now I need to look out for Roy's bus around Brighton & Hove.

And how lovely that this thread was started on Remembrance Day, which was also our late Dad, Ken's birthday. Neither my Dad, Mum Joy nor our sister Karen ever made it to the Amex but they are here in spirit every game. The Chuter connection with the Albion lives on in the next generation because my youngest lads Sam and Jamie are avid supporters and so is our oldest, Matt when he is back from Uni...I am still working on my daughter Emma to get the BHA bug and I blame those wilderness years. Karen's daughters Natalie and Charlotte, now in their early twenties, come to matches too when they can; Karen used to take them to the Goldstone as tiny babies in a baby carrier on her back so they were BHA born and raised at first.

So glad that supporters like Roy and all the other fighters stood up when it mattered, laughed (and spat!) in the face of the likes of Bellotti, and helped to rescue the club we all love.

The 5 also goes past Withdean, and close to the site of The Goldstone.

It also turns the corner of Holmes Avenue and Elm Drive in Hove where I used to live.

Roy would never go past the old Goldstone site after it fell, not even on a bus!

Yes, I can confirm that some very silly detours happened because Roy wouldn't travel past the old Goldstone site

Presume the biographical details will be corrected, Lynne.
It's a lovely tribute, that's for sure.
