Apparently 10,000 people may have died in one region alone, not including the missing from elsewhere. Then you have hundreds of thousands of displaced and homeless residents in the path of more storms, not to mention disease outbreaks thanks to a lack of infrastructure. It was always likely that, even with a half-decent evacuation plan in place, the Philippines is just too densely populated and not connected enough to allow everyone to make it away in time.

It puts our little 'storm' into perspective. Awful scenes.

The place you are talking about is Tacloban the capital of Leyte,

My wife hails from Tolosa about 10 miles south of Tacloban, We have not heard from any family since the Typhoon, its all very worrying, there are no phones and no power, so no way to charge phones or internet. rumours are power could be off for months.

Personally I have been to Tacloban many times, a very busy bustling port city. Personally we are devastated by whats happened.

another NSC member ...Smudge has family down that way on Siquior Island, I know he is ok in Bali with his wife but as far as I know he also has not heard from family,

UK govt today sent £6 million in aid...

Makes our rubbish little storm look like a gentle breeze.

Now there is another Low forming south of the Philippines.....I hope it goes the other way....

Massively devastating, particularly as the infrastructure/places to escape don't exist despite the forecasts predicting the storm. Does look like another storm will head through in the next few days, although it looks nothing like this one.

One thing though, it's not the deadliest cyclone ever (as far as we know so far), but it probably was the strongest to make landfall. 300000-500000 is the "record" http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/deadlyworld.asp

Well maybe the government could direct some of the £12 billion in oversea aid to this country instead of sending more British aid on top of what we send already. We have people dieing in this country because they don't get the Cancer drugs they need, homeless people who need a roof themselves.

Totally agree with that.

My ex and Sid Jnr live close to Worthing hospital and there is a thriving Filipino community in the area due to working at the hospital.

My lad has maintained a friendship with a young Filipino lad for about 8 years since primary school and both he and his family are just so lovely and welcoming it's a treat and pleasure to know them.

Recently the Filipinos had a type of festival in Homefield Park, playing their music and most importantly, selling their home cooked food. Bloody marvelous it was.

My thoughts are most definitely with them at this time.

Tragic and sadly the infrastructure will take a lifetime to get back to where it was.

As stated our "storm" really is insignificant compared to this.
