Why celebrate a terrorist ?

After celebrating this attempted explosion within the seat of government, perhaps we should celebrate all the similar such events in a likewise fashion? Don't think so. Utter rhubarb.

The question was what was the point of them - not if the point was a good one !

Besides Hillian1 has solved the mystery.

Can take or leave them personally, although certainly won't buy them. Watch everyone else's I say. Waste of money when your neighbours have spent a fortune on them.

I think it is the thwarting of the gunpowder plot that is celebrated, not the attempted explosion.

The point is a lot of people enjoy them, hence the fact a lot of shops sell them at this time of year and there are a lot of public displays that are well attended. Of course, as with everything in life, you don't have to go along with it. Stay indoors and shut all the windows. Now, moving on, is the op going to ask what's the point of xmas/new year/valentines day/ etc etc etc.

It's the fact that the attempted assassination failed that Bonfire Night is celebrated, why would King James have allowed it otherwise?! Personally I like them but I'm with The Legend that IS Lawro in that I wouldn't buy them myself when everyone else is conveniently using them to give me a good show!

I draw the line at sending greetings card for Firework Night!!!!

If you're party to certain religions (which I'm not) then there are obvious reasons to celebrate Christmas. If you are not, it's a good excuse to get together with your extended family, get merry, have office parties, watch some classic films, be generous! Valentines day is good if you're with someone you love, not so good if you're not! New Years day, out with the old and in with the new. Optimism which is invarialbly unfounded but again, a good reason to get merry and enjoy the company of your friends. Unfortunately, a bi-product of their popularity is of course the regrettable commercialisation of them but, from my perspective, that is a small price to pay.

Of course, all the above doesn't mean you can't enjoy other times of the year but the collective nature of those events can, to some, make them more enjoyable. Compare it to Brighton scoring a goal. Do you enjoy it more because almost everyone is celebrating or do you think it would be equally enjoyable if only you and couple of mates with you were the only ones jumping up and down????
