Jamie Oliver must have a clever money making team behind him. When you watch some of his more recent programmes where he strays away from just cooking food, you start to realise quite how thick he is!

Cheers for sharing.

I've not read New Statesman for a long time but I really must get back into the habit of it.

Great stuff from Self

The funny thing is I saw this almost as soon as it was posted thanks to following Paul Bernal on twitter. The reason I do that? Because one of the teachers on NSC shared Paul Bernal's Mr Gove blog post right here on NSC!

I think Will Self needs to lighten up, it's just a bit of lunch. Oliver isn't everyone's cup of tea, but by Christ he makes things happen.

To each their own. I look for humbleness: a rare trait in the modern world.
To me, he's odious.
Just wanted to add that.

All writers are arrogant at every single level. That includes all of us on this site. The second you click reply or post a new thread you are throwing your opinion at an untold number of Brighton fans and you are secretly thinking 'please like me'.

To cross reference the radio / FB thread the reason the fat bird you hated at school posts 'Morning Lovelies xxxxxx' on FB is that she reckons she's just written something that will get a couple of "likes" from the similarly bereft of intellect.

I like Will Self and can't stand Jamie Oliver.

But that piece just comes across as mean-spirited and petty. I was hoping for some genuine ammunition I could use against Oliver in my arguments (which are probably just as mean-spirited and petty) but I've got nothing to work with here.

That has done absolutely nothing to enhance the low opinion I already hold on Will Self.

ditto. The guy is a tool and a f**king useless one at that.

Self is a parody, an ex smack head espousing the virtues of socialism despite having had a privileged upbringing himself and sending his own kids to private school.

The reality is that Self is the thin end of the wedge, once he attains any form of credibility before we know where we are we will have the pissy pant earnest types holding out the incoherent narcissistic ramblings of Self's fellow ex skag fiend (but less privileged) Russell Brand as some kind if prophetic wisdom............at that point the sane in this country may just as well turn the lights out and smother their children.

The name NewStatesman always put me off, scared me in the sense that it would fizz over my head. Only when a chap, in the year above me at school, started writing for them, did I read it and I'm glad I did.

Seems to be the season for Celeb vs Celeb.

I read an open letter from Robert Webb to Russell Brand on there this very morning.

http://www.newstatesman.com/2013/10/russell-choosing-vote-most-british-kind-revolution-there

Funny how certain celebs / columnist grate.

Personally I tend to avoid ANY celebrity writing a column of any kind and even worse when they have a pop at each other.

The other one from the peep show is having a public spat with Steve Coogan at the mo.

I didn't really know Webb to be honest, never watched Peep Show beyond a few minutes, but recently saw him on Room 101 when he came across as an insufferable pseudo intellectual lovey.

Committed a cardinal offence as far as I'm concerned by quoting literature to back up a point. Can't stand it !

No different from someone saying "Charity begins at home", really ? Just because someone else once thought it.

On this one. Love the cynicism of Wilf Self can't stand Jamie Oliver.

Narrow minded, ignorant and arrogant. Well done. Take a bow.
